Reporter’s Notebook: expo coverage and a tribute to Stan Flack
By Dennis Sellers
Jan 8 at 7:00am
When the Moscone Center opened yesterday, I was a bit worried. It was sloooow for the first hour, then things picked up and the rest of the day seemed pretty busy at most booths. Despite Apple’s bowing out, it’s the time of year when I get to see folks in person I don’t get to hang out with the rest of the year.

Reporter's Notebook: Phil did pretty good -- but where's my 28-inch iMac?
Said:
I am excited by the announcements. New versions of iLife and iWork will touch more lives than an new iMac. The new version of iMovie is awesome. The new picture-in-picture feature alone helps me a ton.
The 17” MBP is really nice. I’m almost ready to replace my aging 17” unit. The main thing holding me back is that I know that Intel will release Nehalem for laptops later this year.
MWSF: MacBU upgrades Entourage, delivers new ways to collaborate with PC and
Said:
Title for article should use future, not present tense. Particularly since both parts won’t be officially released until the end of this year (so basically a YEAR from now).
Reporter's Notebook: Phil did pretty good -- but where's my 28-inch iMac?
Said:
I can’t agree with Bob. Nobody who shares living space with another person can use their computer in the living room and the vast majority of people living alone aren’t willing and able to drop three grand on a TV set.
I was disappointed that there were no desktop announcements because I’m in the market for the first time in a few years and because Apple desktops are so far behind the curve in many respects (graphics chips 2 full generations old, Mac mini mostly 3 year old components, stock RAM/HD worse than $499 PCs, no quad core under $2500 despite the widespread PC use of the Intel Core2Quad since January 2007).
The Mac Pro is waiting for Intel to release the Core i7 Xeon, a chip they delayed a full quarter because of the economy.
I know how Dennis feels regarding people begging for money. I work in a tourist oriented area sandwiched between the cruise ship terminal and Canada’s poorest neighbourhood. Beggars sometimes number a dozen per block. The most honest one asks “would you buy a bum a beer?”.
Reporter's Notebook: Phil did pretty good -- but where's my 28-inch iMac?
Said:
28” is an industry non-size screen, but 30”, 32” or even 36” would work well from a manufacturing approach.
I view TV and movies on my new 24” iMac screen now, any of the above sizes, or even larger would make me spend money I shouldn’t in this economy.
Apple is missing the boat on 36” iMacs with built in Apple TV capability for around $3,000. That will make serious news and change the way we watch TV like the iPod changed the way we listen to music. What was a Podcast before iPods? HD TV & movie sales on iTunes would soar with HD 36” iMacs, real living room media centers.
I have a 73” MItsubishi 1080p TV 12’ away from my desk in my living room. My 24” iMac (1200p) has the same definition and relative screen size when viewed at the edge of my 3’ desk (3’x6’) when I’m sitting in my recliner desk chair. A 30”, 32” or 36” iMac would make me sell my Mitsubishi 73835 (120Hz/1080p) that cost me over $3,000 last June and buy a new iMac.
If the larger 36” screen doesn’t come included in an iMac or new 36” Apple display connected to an upgraded Mac Mini, Sony, HP or Dell will have my upgrade dollars in the future. When you’re in Firefox, Office, Outlook or iTunes, the OS is secondary. I love OSX, but if the hardware isn’t there Windows 7 will drive what is in 2009.
Apple is dragging it feet where it could be excelling. Too much concentration on Steve and not enough on product and market trends could be Apple’s real problem.
Time for a Mac App Store?
Said:
I just noticed when I went to check my iPhones Applications in iTunes that there is a heading just above the app icons titled “iPhone and iPod touch Apps”. I don’t recall seeing that before. Why would they need a heading in there unless there was going to be a “Macintosh Apps” one too?

Reporter's Notebook: Phil did pretty good -- but where's my 28-inch iMac?
Jack Said:
The Apple strategy going forward is to make product releases on their own schedule, not IDC’s. So we can expect a new product introduction every few months. Starting with a press meeting in Cupertino, then the web site, then the Apple stores. This is much better than being limited to MacWorld and the Developer’s Conference. Remember Phil said there were many new products being developed in Apple. Expect the next product release, 28” iMac, Mac Mini, or whatever, within a few months.

Here's the iMac that I want Apple to make

Apple will still hurt themselves and lose customers, or potential customers. Even though BluRay and HD look exactly the same, and the only difference between the two is the capacity . . people are still brainwashed that Blu Ray is better looking. So to please current , and possible , customers Steve Jobs should have just gone ahead and included Blu Ray in the next OS and DVDSP update. It is a bad decisions that they’re not going to.

Here's the iMac that I want Apple to make
DAG Said:
An iMac with EyeTV, Griffin Shark and Front Row already does pretty much all you describe. A 1TB FW800 external HD spares the internal drive a lot of the wear and tear. The Eye TV tuners also support Clear Quam HD (Cable as opposed to ATSC over the air).

MWSF: Pinnacle Systems releasing Video Capture for Mac
