Macsimum Opinion
Plenty of room for growth, innovation in Apple’s current product lines
By Dennis Sellers
Oct 6 at 5:00am
In a recent BusinessWeek, tech reporter Arik Hesseldahl said perhaps it’s time for Apple to concentrate on its current product lines and not worry about any new product lines. I agree—besides, there’s plenty of room for significant innovation and new products in the Mac, iPhone, iPod and Apple TV lines.

Poll: when do you plan to purchase your next Mac?
Said:
I voted for MWSF but I’m actually planning for next June or thereabouts depending on when new product is released. That will be three years since my last purchase.
I’m looking forward to thinner, brighter, possibly larger displays (bigger than 17 inch), probably a 4 core GPU. Any other goodies are gravy; faster FireWire, better speakers, larger HD, Snow Leopard benefits, mystery features.

Vancouver Island school vs. Apple in logo dispute
John Said:
Long time Apple user (since the days of the Mac 512), who was completely behind Apple when they had issues with Apple Corp over the an apple logo… but this ridiculous.
If someone was using an identical or nearly identical symbol, then yeah, but the only real similarity here is an apple silhouette that both are derived from.
Is Apple trying to lay total claim to the apple as it’s brand symbol? No way, there’s too much prior art. During the last go around with Apple Corp, I did a little online research (for obvious prior art ammo that could be used against Apple Corp) at federal website, and came away with over 200 U.S. companies using an apple symbol as a trademark/logo.

AOL Hometown/FTP is closing Oct. 31
Said:
Someone has to ask the question?
Why are you doing this?
The present program justy needed an up date to get it working better. It has been an editing problem for a while. Yiou did not ask us for some extra $$$.
There is no explanation… just an abrupt cut off date and some idea about saving the work which I will try to do by adding all the contacts to my favorite places and let go of my personal work. Especially with http://www.armmat.org The rest --- well good by.
Wow. I have been using these web pages linked to AOL for many years and now I will lose them. As an artist, activist, business owner, and volunteer, the nature of my work and my life helping others will be uprooted from the web on October 31, 2008. The hours I have worked on these sites will be gone. What a shame. riveredgeredord.org, armmat.org, http://hometown.aol.com/nlinsurance/index.html etc.
I will embrace the change.
AOL Thank you for these many years of service.
I was going to be one of those who just drops my membership.
I am not going to do that. Been with you too long.

The Mac Night Owl: 'Is Apple finally learning how to listen to you?'
Harvey Said:
It may be a coincidence, but the day before they offered the $100 credit, I called up Apple. In the conversation, I sympathized with the business need for cutting the price, but reminded the person I was talking to that Apple had just ticked off a million customers who serve as their sales and support staff and work for free. You have high margins, I said, and that means you could give us something that is very valuable to us, but doesn’t cost you very much at all. The person on the other end of the line got very excited. He said he was going into a meeting right after our phone call and that he’d bring it up--he said it several times.
So maybe Apple listens to its customers even better than you think!
Macvide announces FlashVideo Converter 2.0 for Mac OS X
John Said:
This sounds like a great app if, like me you can’t stand the insane profusion of video formats, and you prefer dealing with video files in just format… say QT.
However, I don’t consider myself a cheap person (after all I’m a Mac user), but.. $99 for a conversion app, even this one, is just a bit steep.
Plenty of room for growth, innovation in Apple's current product lines
Said:
I always consedered Apple to be the most innovative company, but on their established product lines, I must admit I am starting to think that are getting lost with telephones and iPods and other gadgets and loose out to come up with serious Pro Computer stuff. Is my feeling right or do I want to much?

MyWeather Mobile responds to user feedback with new release
Said:
I’m sure it’s a lovely app, but, I’m not about to pay $10 for it. Maybe 99 cents like most of the other apps, but, not 10. This isn’t the only weather app out there and I think he would make much more money just by charging a bit less.

The really upsetting fact is that I can’t find any way to add a 301 permanent redirect to the AOL .hta access file. This would save my site and not lose my visibility at all in the transition. This is really a slap in the face. AOL needs to create the permanent redirect function for us. My entire web presence began its invention with my aol members site. This is truly a sad day.

Review: pull up to this Drive-in for your Mac
Said:
I’ve recently picked up a copy of Drive-In with the Parallels software bundle. It was one fo the reasons I bought the bundle. However, I’m hesitating on committing to using it. (These are big decisions).
The problem for me, is that it will only play on a machine capable of playing a DVD. This seems to be short-sighted. One day DVDs will not be in machines (maybe sooner than we imagine on Macs) and all those archived DVDs will no longer be readable. A non-hardware reliant format seems vastly preferable.
Secondly ... not having AppleTV compatibility is a real turn off. The AppleTV may be in the early stages of its life, but it is definitely the future of home entertainment.

I have been using the beta version of Drive-in for more than a year now to watch DVDs on my laptop. My battery life has doubled. I haven’t taken a DVD with me on the road since.
I was surprised it was in beta so long because it never missed a beat and I never ran into a bug. I bought it as soon as it was available.
