Will Apple update its Cinema Display line with iSights, glossy screen options?

Okay, let’s assume that all the speculation is true and that Apple will unveil new Mac Pros, Intel-based pro desktop replacements for the PowerPC line, during CEO Steve Jobs’ Aug. 7 keynote to kick off the 2006 Worldwide Developer Conference. The question is: will updated Cinema Displays follow?

Now that the MacBook Pro, MacBook and iMacs all have built-in iSights, it makes sense for Apple to revamp its display line and include the same feature. If I buy a pro desktop I’m going to want a display that will let me use Front Row and PhotoBooth, two fun features of the consumer systems and the pro laptop. If Apple doesn’t plan to tweak the Cinema Display line (and I think it will), hopefully Jobs & Company will release a new standalone iSight with enhanced functionality.

If such updated monitors are in the works, it will be interesting to see whether Apple offers them with glossy and non-glossy screen options as it does with the MacBook. Thoughts? Write me at daseller@earthlink.net

MacManic Says:

It will also be interesting to see if they support HDCP.

Kevin Says:

I would like to see Apple add similiar functionality to the Cinema Displays that Dell offers it it’s models. Specifically, adding the ability to simultaneously connect mulitiple devices (2 - DVI, VGA, Component, Composite), and the ability to display with swapping and picture-in-picture functionality. I would also like to see more USB and Firewire inputs. Finally, how about lowering the prices to attract more buyers.

The other nice thing would be a 15” size as well as a 17” offering. Less cost but just right for the majority of “new” Mac users. ie: my Mom.
I hope they all go glossy on the screens. I’m sure there will be some 3M “matte” product that comes out. Maybe the “diamond” shield they have for the nano.
Also a way to turn the Monitor into a firewire or USB hub might be nice as well. Hide it behind the monitor.
iSight is a must.

C. Christensen Says:

Why on earth would I (or anyone else, for that matter) shell out the big bucks for an over-price Apple display? Viewsonic, Sony, and a huge number of other vendors all offer high quality panels for much lower prices.

Oh sure, I will grant you that Apple distributes some very nice displays. But if you crunch the numbers in a cost vs. value the other guys always leave Apple in the dust.

Do I want one? Sure. So much so that I will probably pick one up (open box or slightly used) from some one on eBay. But to purchase a new one? I think that I would have to win the lottery first.

The $$$ that Apple charges for a Cinema display can only be justified if you are doing tons of Video editing and you have the cash flow (or client list) that make it de riguer to have a bunch of them in your office.

it doesn’t make sense, when they start lowering prices so it’s affordable to the consumers, i know i and over several thousand people are not going to buy these displays.

mcloki,
Current Apple Displays already have 2 USB 2 and 2 Firewire ports on the back..

C. Christensen - I paid big bucks for an Apple Cinema Display for a couple of reasons.  Obviously #1 is design, it matches all of my other Mac peripherals and computers.  Secondly I do web dev stuff and blog all day so the huge real estate helps me be productive, but then again other widescreens do that.  Okay so yeah I justify reason #1.. I could give a crap less about value.  I just want what looks good and performs well.  I don’t need 48 USB ports and a 144-in-one card reader all made of plastic.

Hoping the new displays finally have an HDCP compliant HDMI input,…

Moof Says:

Agreed on the HDMI. I currently own the 30” cinema, and would entertain the idea of trading up to a new display with iSight built-in, and HDMI…

Sluggo Says:

Apple’s Cinema Displays are definitely priced a bit higher than other displays, but they’re also drastically better than most.  They are also sold as part of the “Pro” line of desktops, not necessarily marketed toward the consumer.  That’s why iMac’s and Mac Mini’s exist.  We’ve purchased over 40 Cinema Display’s for our design firm, both 23” and 30”, and they’re worth every penny.

Fred Says:

theres no way they will have a glossy screen option. This is a Pro monitor and anything that changes the contrast/real color display such as the glossy screen renders the display worthless for color correction.

The only reason they would add an isight is for video conferencing. Photobooth and other “fun” features are not what Professionals buy the cinema display for.

I have one of the early 22” apple cinema displays and it cost a packet but it was worth every single $. It has performed flawlessly under heavy use ever since - an if you were wondering, that is 5 years of hard toil.

Sluggo is right, you get what you pay for.

If apple released a new display i would buy one without hesitation. My partner could then have this one and would stop complaining about her puny 17”. I also understand that some people can’t afford the $ but they can go out and buy a NoNameCrapUShiita instead but how good will it be and for how long?

JT Says:

I have been using dual 19.0” dell ultrasharp flat panels for a few years now and they have and still serve me well.  At the time I could not afford the cinema displays offered and for $675 bucks for both how could I go wrong.  I am in the market to upgrade and am tossed between the 23 and 30 incher, but will wait until after WWDC.

There is no question I will buy a cinema display.  I really don’t care about the extras, like built in iSight although it would remove some of the clutter.  As far as the Glossy option, I agree that this is not something I would be interested in.  I am a web developer / designer and spend my days in photoshop cs2 and fancy myself a amt/pro videographer.  And Play around in Final Cut all the time.  for that reason I am probably going to purchase a new mac book pro without the glossy as well.

It all comes down to screen realestate/resolution for me.  Not size.  That is all BS.  You can buy a cheaper 24 inch screen from dell, with 1920x1200 Pixels, media reader and PIP, for 750 bills, but I have yet to see a monitor with the pop that the cinema displays have.  Sony makes a 23 incher with the same resolution, but is is around the same price, probably becuase both companies are rumored to used the same supplier for there LCDs.

At the end of the day if you are a true Mac “person” and pay $399 for you iPod and thousands for you desktop and laptops, there is only one way to go.  And whatever innovations Steve shows us in a few weeks, we will be pacing until we can blow more of our hard earned cash on new toys.

E-Dogg Says:

Apple builds products for the consumer that values not only undeniably superior quality and performance, but aesthetics as well. It’s ALWAYS been that way. They don’t NEED to build products for every high school grad at WalMart. Let those folks (who basically just surf the web, send e-mail and play first-person shooters) buy a Dell or some other generic piece of plastic that “runs” Windows. They apparently don’t recognize the difference, so why SHOULD they pay the difference if they don’t appreciate it. But I DO recognize the difference, so I will CONTINUE to patronize Apple.
It’s in everything they do… packaging, the amazingly intuitive OS, the superior reliability and performance, endless features, forward compatibility (remember the hub-bub over the lack of a diskette slot on the iMac!)… attention to detail. Not following, but leading. I will fight for Apple to the death.

These changes would be nice. I got the Dell 30” (love it so far) because of the USB and the card reader it has built in. Also I like the black frame better than silver (less glare). The shiny screen would be good as long as you don’t have a two and three year old like me (too many finger prints).

Macben Says:

I think they should create a consumer line of displays to go along whit the mac mini or as a second displays for iMac and macbook. Maybe a 17"(179$) and a 19"(229$) screen offering.

My 2 cents

Apple Cinema Displays are popular among people (like me) who require accurate on-screen color. Once they’ve been profiled, these displays are capable of matching a contract proof, which is very important in the print industry. When Apple updates their Cinema Displays, I’d be extremely surprised if they didn’t keep a matte option, as the glossy ones would be unsuitable for high-end color work.

Also, I’d be surprised if they didn’t offer them without a built-in iSight, because having a camera built in would render them unsuitable for use in sensitive environments. Clients with strict NDAs are not very receptive to things like webcams in production areas.

My 2002 G4 iMac is showing signs of age. My next purchase in 2007 will ideally be a new quad core 23-inch iMac and a 23-inch cinema display with HDMI for an extended desktop. The iMac will already have a built in camera so I see no need to choose a cinema display with the iSight. I only hope that DiskWarrior for the Intel Macs will be made available by then.

meatofmoose: are you kidding?

-there are no quad-core imacs
-why an external display for an imac? if you need that much realestate, you must be in pro-apps, so why not a mac pro?
-DVI will be the standard for a while. at least for now, hdmi is an entertainment display standard. i don’t know why anyone would use it for their computer to monitor connection.
