Upcoming iTunes to support podcasting

Apple CEO Steve Jobs said Sunday night that support for podcasting will be included in the next version of iTunes, due within 60 days, reports MarketWatch.

Podcasting involves recording an audio blog directly to a computer, posting it to a server and making it available to fans via free software that scours the Web for the show. Once detected, the broadcast is downloaded automatically for transfer to a portable MP3 device such as an iPod, which is where the term podcasting comes from. Think of it as akin to an audio magazine subscription. A subscriber receives regular audio programs delivered via the Internet, and can listen to them at her leisure.

Jobs made his announcement at “D3: All Things Digital,” a technology conference sponsored by The Wall Street Journal in San Diego. Jobs was “slightly dismissive of populist programming,” said Tim O’Reilly, founder and CEO of O’Reilly Media, a technology publishing company.

“Current plans call for podcasts to be free downloads,” wrote Mena Trott, co-founder of Six Apart Inc., and also in the audience. “Users will submit their podcasts and Apple will be hand picking the content it makes available to iTunes users.”

Before his speech, Jobs also met with Adam Curry, the former MTV disc jockey who has tirelessly promoted creation of radio-like programs for download. Later in his own podcast, Curry reported he was “able to provide a lot of input,” and told Jobs the iPod hardware should also record. “I can guarantee you this is going to happen,” Curry told MarketWatch.

Fausto Fernos Says:

Hopefully Apple will allow all kinds of podcasts available to folks to listen to, not just the obvious choices.

The show I do, called “Feast of Fools” bills itself as a show about everything. We talk with outrageous people about hilarious topics, news and gossip.
