The Macsimum interview: PocketMac

imageMacsimum runs a semi-regular series of interviews with Mac specialists, dealers and companies worldwide. This week we’re talking with Tim Goggin of PocketMac, which makes a variety of goodies for Apple products, including PocketMac SecureNotes, PocketMac Remote and PocketMac Safari Scrapbook.

Macsimum: How long have you been in business?

Goggin: We’ve been in business for seven years now. The company started when Terence Goggin, our CTO and founder. realized that there was no Mac-to-Pocket-PC sync tool and from there we’ve created PocketMac for BlackBerry, the original Mac-to-BlackBerry sync solutions and many more.

Macsimum: Do you cater to any particular market niche?

Goggin: We cater to early adopters in the Mac market who want the latest devices and gadgets to work with their Macs. That’s our largest market segment.

Macsimum: What differentiates PocketMac from other companies?

Goggin: We specialize in solving problems for our customers on the Macintosh. From synching over 430 devices to our constant development of new products, we try to anticipate and fulfill the needs of our customers that aren’t being met. The product that most powerfully illustrates this is PocketMac for BlackBerry which syncs Macs to BlackBerry handhelds. This is such a useful tool for the Mac market and the BlackBerry field that Research In Motion licensed it from us two years ago. Simply put, our goal is to continually develop solutions for Mac users that make their life easier and simpler.

Macsimum: How has the introduction of such products as the iPod, iPhone and Apple TV affected the Mac end of your business?

Goggin: Well, we always try to add on to such devices but honestly it hasn’t affected our business all that much. There’s some overlap but not as much as you might think.

ben Says:

Who is now responsible for PocketMac for BlackBerry development and support?  I have never gotten any versions to correctly sync with Now-Up-to-Date shared categories and seem to get the run around from PM and RIM.  Now software are releasing a new version of NUD/C so perhaps they are waiting to for that to update the NUD/C support in PM, but it hasn’t worked correctly for years now, even with the latest versions.

I purchased Pocket Mac Pro about two years ago and it sucks. It erased some records or duplicated others and I never got consistent, reliable results. It’s composed of many different apps and has a terrible UI. Then I found The Missing Sync. It is, hands down, the best synchronization tool I’ve ever used.

Gary Says:

I’m with Brian above. I purchased PocketMac some considerable time ago in order to sync my Win Mobile PDA, but switched to MissingSync as PM is just too darned unreliable - I could have lived with the horrible UI if it had worked, but mostly it doesn’t. MissingSync is by far the best sync tool I’ve used on Mac OR Windows and leaves PM so far behind it’s embarrassing.

I used the paid and free version os PocketMac for the BlackBerry.  It is at best a Beta product.  The syncing is incomplete and the support for Memos/Note is horrible (sync to Stickies).  It is not even worth the price of free.

MissingSync for BlackBerry is worth every penny and works.

Neil Says:

I have to agree with everyone so far...PocketMac is buggy and instable. Missing Synch is far better, in that it actually works for synching my BlackBerry to OS X.

And e-mails from PocketMac’s Lauren like this one I got in February as part of what was probably an all-customer marketing bulletin don’t help…

“I’ve messed up and in fact, all of us at PocketMac have messed up. I want to apologize in advance. For over a year, we’ve been working on a free Windows Mobile 5 update for all of our Windows Mobile customers and our updates have been sporadic, inconclusive and promised deadlines which we haven’t been able to make.”

I appreciate the honestly, but that doesn’t mean you have a good product. I don’t even use Windows Mobile.

Bought this software 2 weeks ago and the activation code doesn’t work.  Emailed 3 times over the two weeks to 3 email addresses without any response whatsoever.  Cronic custmer service.  PocketMac - you ####!!

Richard Quinones Says:

I really wish I found this before I wasted my $$ on this product. My short experience with this company mirrors others posted above. Purchased but couldn’t register. Couldn’t contact Tech support because they won’t give you phone support unless you pay for it. I HAVE TO PAY YOU TO TO REGISTER THE SOFTWARE I PAID FOR? I can’t send a tech support email (their required means of support) because I don’t have a password. I found Lauren’s email in their Knowledge Base and emailed her. She sent me a fix for the registration but it doesn’t sync. I am awaiting Lauren again.
I’m going to check out Missing Sync .
STAY AWAY FROM POCKETMAC IF ONLY FORTHEIR SUPPORT!

PocketMac offers a really great product, I think these jokers above me are a tad bitter. Thank you Terence, for bringing Mac functionality to my BlackBerry!
