The New York City metro region beats Silicon Valley for high-tech employment, with a technology workforce outnumbered only by its financial and healthcare sectors, according to a recent report.

The Industrial and Technology Assistance Corporation (ITAC) has found that the technology sector provides jobs to 227,000 people in New York City, reports InformationWeek. Healthcare provides 366,000 jobs, while finance provides 313,000 jobs. The New York City Council’s committees on Technology in Government and Economic Development are expected to hold a joint hearing Wednesday to look into ways to continue promoting technology sector growth.

The report found that high-tech jobs pay above average wages and that the New York metropolitan statistical area is the largest center of high-tech employment in the U.S. The report found that New York City leads the nation for its number of graduate science students (more than 18,000 in 2004) and that the primary reason tech firms move to New York is its proximity to customers.
