Sun has released the second version of its xVM VirtualBox open source desktop virtualization software and claims it’s finding traction for its use among Mac uses, reports InformationWeek.
VirtualBox enables a developer to develop code on a Mac, a Windows, Linux or Solaris machine and then run it in a virtual machine that mimics its target environment. Sun acquired VirtualBox as open source code when it bought Innotek, a German desktop virtualization firm, in February.
The code is available for download here and is gaining ground as an alternative to commercial products, such as Parallels’ Parallels Desktop for the Mac or VMware’s Fusion, says Steve Wilson, vice president of xVM in Sun’s software group.
The 2.0 version supports Mac OS X, 64 bit Linux, Windows Vista and Sun’s Solaris and OpenSolaris.

Serenak Says:
Well I have been using it since it came out of beta and it works great…
My needs are not huge admittedly (just want to be able to play with various Linux distros without a lot of aggravation) but so far it has worked perfectly for me and it’s free what more need I say?
If you are even vaguely interested in using VMs even just to play with the idea then download it and give it a go - you have nothing to lose!
