Steve Jobs’ keynote appearance: is he well?

Macsimum reader Eric Heukeshoven says there was various speculation after Monday’s Apple Worldwide Developer Conference keynote that CEO Steve Jobs was:

° Grooming successors for giving keynotes;

° Not happy with progress on Leopard;

° Not healthy.

Now none of this may be the case, but Eric decided to look for signs of the latter by comparing views of Jobs from the WWDC keynote in 2005 to Monday’s event. Attached are two screen grabs. Overall, Apple’s head honcho appears to be thinner in ‘06 (above right) than in ‘05 (above left). His beard also has reappeared this year.

“It’s mere speculation on my part, but I’d say something is taking its toll on our favorite CEO,” Eric says. “Could be the stock options issue, or something much worse.”

Hopefully, the CEO is healthy and happy. He’s only a couple of years older than Yours Truly and my weight (and facial hair) can certainly vary depending on a variety of factors. Personally, I hope that Steve Jobs is at Apple’s helm for years to come, and I have a feeling that most of you feel the same.

deepkid Says:

I certainly have compassion for Steve, but it’s pretty sad how the press/web has concentrated so much attention on a wealthy individual who can afford the best quality healthcare on the planet.

Now if they’d only spend half that time considering and acting on behalf the well being of millions who aren’t nearly as fortunate.

Greg Alexander Says:

I certainly thought he was grooming people. That guy looked like he had studied a Steve Jobs video of what Steve wanted to say, and then practiced to replicate it exactly. He pauses at certain times, he looks down at certain times… I was intrigued (I’m a therapist and also work in team development :-) ).

My boss does a similar thing. He’s got a military background and wants his talks replicated almost exactly. To be REALLY effective though requires an individual’s own style, and adjustment depending on the crowd.

Anyway, I hadn’t considered that it might be his health, though I deeply hope that Steve hasn’t got his cancer back.

I was thinking along the same line as you about his health. I also wrote an article about it on my own webblog talking about how he looks now and his health in the past (which may be a factor). Of course just lik eyou I couldn’t make a conclusion

It’s amazing how skillful these diagnosticians are to discern illness and issue prognoses from a few video clips and without any laboratory data, radiological reports, and in-depth discussions with the patient. Yes, Steve Jobs is going to die – sometime and so will they. Everyone will soon be receiving a bill in the mail for my expert analysis of your terminal condition I have named “mortality”.

I didn’t think that Macsimum would stoop to the level of Mac trash, but you have. That’s very disappointing.  You had also done a column on 50 Europeans who had a gripe over fading letters on a Mac notebook keyboard. It appears that this editor is running out of real issues or topics.

This is a low blow and you should be ashamed of yourself. Hiding behind a guest writer or reader makes it worst. There’s no excuse for such garbage.

Welshdog Says:

Like many middle aged men Steve was a little portly before his cancer diagnosis.  The he got the scare of his life and maybe he decided to live a little healthier.  I bet he is eating better and chose to drop some poundage.  I have observed that people who are fat and then lose weight often look gaunt and unwell.  It looks to me that when Steve gains weight it shows in his face (I have the same problem) so when he loses it there is a noticeable change.  That skin doesn’t want to streach back.

I think he is fine.

I feel stupider after reading this. That’s hard to believe because i’ve been reading so much stupid crap on Mel Gibson, Tom Cruise’s baby, and if some Hollywood studio is going to loose cash on Oliver Stone’s movie because of what’s going on in England. Sorry. This article brought me over the edge.

But here’s a hearty “cheers” to everyone that gets off on this garbage! And for those who care, I lost a few pounds this year and I’m working out every so often, which, might I add, is an improvement.

I second deepkid’s sentiment. As for all the coverage of the current topic, it’s getting pretty close to tabloid journalism.

MacGeekGuy Says:

Yeah, I hope Steve is alright too but I totally agree with daver and tom - this is more of a Macsimum Celebrity Gossip article than news. There were no facts, just rumor and speculation… which is irritating enough when talking about computers… but we’re talking about a human (yes, Steve is human) life and really have little right to do so. Gods… sometimes I’m really glad that I’m not a celeb like Steve. I can’t imagine having thousands of people critiquing my health and state of being just for trying to do my job. Poor guy.

Rolleyes Says:

On Steve’s health: none of us knows, but I will say this: a short beard, like the one he now has, makes a person look thinner. After being clean-shaven, I grew a very similar one earlier this year, and everyone immediately asked me - some with concern in their voices -when I had suddenly lost so much weight. In fact, my weight had remained constant.

That said, the two things that concerned me were that his chest and shoulders looked a bit less “built” so to speak, and that his skin looked organge-ish (often a side effect of cancer and/or cancer treatment). I still don’t now about his frame, but as for the skin it seems clear that it’s a side-effect of the fact that all the screenshots from the ‘06 keynote are darker and have a different color balance.

So my guess is that he probably has just lost weight and not been working out or exercising as much.

I disagree with some above--this is not gossipmongering.  When someone who loves the limelight exits the stage early, it is cause for concern.

Like most I was concerned. Steve Jobs is one of the few that came from nothing and built something first, and got it right.Their are maybe 3-4 truely creative inventors in the computer world that can do that. I heard a stupid comment from many mag’s and it was this “Apple is Steve Jobs, and can apple survive without him?”
Um no.
Physic’s is Einstein, and netscape was James Barksdale, and caesar was rome. Of course a company, government, science is nothing without the person that did it. India fell into ruin after gondi died. No apple can not survive so stop asking, no one has, read a book.
If steve jobs is sick then the world of computing is about to get allot more boring. If he dies the computer world will suffer too. Hes one of the few that can do it.
Do I think he’s sick , na he was open to talk about it last time, and I’m sure he would display the same class, and it’s none of our business. Can MS survive without gates predatory practices , no. People make companies.
I truely hope you are ok Mr. Jobs, and its none of my business. My interest is a selfish one, your very cool to have around and the computer world would suffer without you.
That said I believe, actually leopard is a OS that Job is adding enhancements, so that it will not be a minor upgrade. I believe hes declaring war, and is willing to risk it all, its his nature.

Joseph Awad MD Says:

First I have no direct knowledge of his medical condition. However, as a Gastroenterologis with experience with patients having his condition and surgery, I will make the following observations.

If he had all or most of his pancreas removed he is now diabetic requiring insulin. Thus, it would not be surprising that he is thinner, especially if he is the compulsive control freak patient one might predict him to be. PS he was never portly.

The type of tumor he is purported to have are often not be completely cured by an operation but are usually slow growing over many years but may cause some symptoms.

My best guess is he has surgically induced diabetes resulting in his current appearance.

Marijke Buys Says:

Thanx Joseph for that explenation, I tried to search about exactly that and I was convincing myself (with only biological background for me) that there was a big possibility that he is diabatic now. I couldn’t find anything about that on the internet by these cancers but it would be just logic when you have a: cancer in the cells that make insuline and b: when you remove part of the pancreas
