Sprint’s new Instinct vs. iPhone (videos)

Posted by Dave Merten Apple ico May 10, 2008 at 5:31pm

imageSoon you will be seeing advertisements comparing Sprint’s new Instinct to an iPhone. Sprint is going to spend $100 million to promote their new iPhone competitor. The advertisements leverage the EV-DO and true GPS that are packed into the Instinct. Sprint is hoping to use that comparison to convince people to buy the Instinct over the iPhone.

Although there are a lot of impressive Instinct features—like watching television, touchscreen vibration feedback and turn-by-turn GPS—in the videos below, they leaves out the obvious fact that the iPhone has more screen real estate, and that it has a capacitive touch screen. The Instinct will no doubt be a good phone, but it just doesn’t seem to have the intuitiveness the iPhone brings. What are your impressions?

$100 Million?
Let me get this straight. 100 Million to compare a device that’s coming out in June with the current iPhone that is going to be replaced in the same month?
How desperate are these people?
If your device is really that good, compare it to the new iPhone - if you dare!!!

tjKendl Says:

One of the first things I noticed in both videos was how everyone who tried pressing the on-screen buttons had problems with the phone consistently accepting the first press. Not the case with my iPhone.
I love the comment on the difference between the cases. I think I’ll take a slightly heavy case if I feel it’s better constructed.
No multi-touch scaling, but according to them, it’s no big deal. Yeah right, I don’t think so.
I like that it has a slot for memory, but with no internal memory, it seems a joke to somehow make it sound like they’ve one-upped the iPhone. Put in internal memory as well as a slot and then you can brag.
Lastly, the interface stinks compared to the iPhone. The interface design looks so ‘80’s.

If you new anything about advertising and marketing you would know that $100 mil is typical for this type of hype.  I bet the iphone advertising and marketing was at $100 mil or exceeded that.

“The interface design looks so ‘80’s” Yeah… I remember back in 1987 my cell had the same UI. *rolls eyes*

I noticed that too right away. The GUI also reminded me of using a Web app on an iPhone.

daPrinz Says:

My point is is spending $100 mil on a comparison with a Phone that’s going to be outdated the time their device hits the market.
By that time you’re going to have 2 iPhone models (1st and 2nd generation) I can see Sprint spending some more mil. to add the legal
* compared to the 1st generation iPhone.
And people are going to ask: “ What about the 2nd?”
Well, probably next year, days before the 3rd generation! =)

Schultzee Says:

This is a classic example of Steve Jobs #1 rule of marketing: Never show the product until it’s ready for market. The responsiveness of the touch screen appears to be really bad. I would be frustrated on the first day of ownership and would return it. Furthermore, Every video that shows the browser shows that it’s not ready for market. Internet browsing is the #1 application used on the iPhone, and the excellent Safari browser is the reason.

Samsung and Sprint should take their time, invest the $100 million in further development. This thing is not ready for market. Once they have it dialed in and ready to compete, they would have to spend half as much to market it.

It’s interesting to see such a contrast in marketing savvy.

Mike Says:

Geez, how hard does this guy have to push the screen and buttons, beta or not! It may give the iPhone a run for its money. The commercials show that the Insight is better, in connectivity, but how will it stack against the iPhone, when the iPhone is 3G and may have GPS capabilities? We’ll just have to wait and see what Steve pulls out of his arse! Does the Insight’s browser allow flash? If the iPhone2 has GPS, 3G, and supports flash, then I’m giving my current iPhone to my girl and I’ll scoop up the new one. Will Sprint allow the Insight to be on their $99-everything plan? Since we’ll have to wait until both phones come out, I’d still give the edge to the iPhone.  For Sprint users, this will keep them happy if Samsung can get their OS and touch capabilities more responsive.  So far nothing can come close to surpassing the iPhone.  There are a lot of imitators, but there can only be one!

The comment made by ‘I don’t drink koolaid’ was funny!

@daPrinz

ATT 3G will be ATT 3G-Edge (no HSDPA), which still be 15 times slower than Sprints Rev-A.  What you have seen thus far of the Instinct is nothing compared what you will see in the T.V AD’s.  Also, There will-not be that much of a difference between Iphone 1 and Iphone 2, aside from limited GPS.

Sprint might be 15x faster but you also have to press each key 15x when you write something on that phone. It kind of levels things out! =)
Btw, the iPhone rendered in Germany webpages as fast and some pages even faster than a Nokia device. (Nokia on 3G and the iPhone on 2.5G network).
I think that’s amazing.
And the iPhone has one little advantage. Mac OsX! - Priceless!!!

I have been researching this Instint for some time now and I too am noticing the slow responsiveness to the keypad when touched.  Hopefully Samsung and Sprint will have this corected before their launch date to the pubic.  However, as with everything there is advantages and disadvantages to everything.  I will enjoy the sd slot, then slimmer model, the faster internt, the music download, and will not enjoy not having the “pinch zoom and out” capabilities.  That in my personal opinion is what makes the internet soo cool and what actually makes the I phone.  So to compare...y is there?  the I phone is just that and the Instinct will be and do it’s thing.  Advantages vs Disadvantages....that’s what t boils down too

Samsumg makes the Memory, Flash Memory Drive and the Processor for the Iphone and Toshiba and Sharp are two of the three companies that makes the screen. What did apple make other than the OS?

Day Says:

The one thing people keep overlooking in the videos is that the phone they are holding is still just a PROTOTYPE! Do you seriously think the iphone was created with absolutely no problems? When the Instinct comes out in June, all those touchscreen kinks you all keep mentioning will be resolved.

the fact is, no matter what touchscreen phone comes out, some people are still going to stay loyal to the iphone simply because it came out first and they are too proud to admit that a new phone may be better than their precious iphone.

it’s just like the ipod vs zune. I have an ipod, but in my opinion, i think the zune is a much better mp3 player and i’m not ashamed to admit it just because i have an ipod.

#### up your pride. it’s ridiculous

All the people saying"the screan dosent work” are u like depth? The phone u see is a PROTOTYPE. It takes a few weeks to fix problems and that video is old. The iphone is good and so is the instinctand for all you people saying stuff about the screen it will change but u guys are babys. Nothing is made perfect it takes time and people who think that the iphone is better get a life. Cant u tell its the same thing but some of the things on the instinct (like the GPS) is better. So why dont u stop KISSING UP tp the iphone and go out into the world!!!

Does anyone know whether or not the network of the NEW iphone is faster or slower than the instinct? I am not sure from the comments above…

I really don’t understand which is better… what is CMPA? What does the iphone use?

Not as technical..help please.

Haha, all these apple fanboys above judging a product that’s not even out yet.  They had fits when anyone judges an apple product before it come out.  I’ll reserve judgement until I actually see one and use one.  (PS you don’t even know it but you’re choices with apple are limited, either them, or, well, them).

Posted on June 18, 2008

Glad to be a Fanboy Says:

There’s nothing wrong with being a fan of Apple when they kick so much a$$.

Like the HTC touch, which promised touch screen simplicity, the I-Stink’s touch screen is a pressure-sensitive piece of garbage.  Yes, AT&T;sucks monkey nuts, but Edge network speed is far from a deal breaker, and comparing anything CDMA-based to it will shortly be a moot point when the 3G ships in July.  This is another clear example of Sprint hyping their vaporware on talking points already rendered DOA by yet another brilliantly-timed Apple launch.

Apple has exactly one entry in the cell phone marketplace, and they clobbered a scorching home run on their first at-bat.  How long has Sprint been doing this?  fifteen years?  And the best they can do is COPY the competition?  Puh-LEASE.  Where is Sprint’s innovation?  What has Sprint introduced that radically revolutionized the way people interract with their mobile devices?  Why have they not come up with anything better than a Java-based P.O.S. music app?  Why are they still forcing proxied, mobile-formatted web content on their users?  For crying out loud, the iPhone is the closest thing to a Mac in the palm of your hand that has ever been invented.

Keep dreaming, Sprint.  Keep blathering on about how fast your network is.  Honestly, who gives a flip, when your software is crashy and inelegant, and you can’t send ten consecutive SMS’s without at least one duplicate and three delayed deliveries?

At the same time, I’m not completely biased -the iPhone does have some serious flaws; but even its most egregious offenses don’t add up to enough to make me want to run out and buy a blocky, button-riddled immitator with a smaller screen and a crappy OS.

Posted on June 19, 2008

prevolution2 Says:

Come on Glad to be a fanboy, don’t b**** about “a duplicate and three delayed deliveries”, that can happen with any carrier.

Anyways, I noticed everyone’s just saying “this phone is better because...” and I just wanted to say that it doesn’t matter which one is better, but rather, which one better suits your needs.

By the way, I dislike being forced to sign a 2 yr contract with AT&T;if I get the Iphone 3G, so is there any word on the Instinct and whether you have to get a contract or not?

Posted on June 20, 2008

Wendy Says:

I’ve read that the Instinct is only going to be $130 after rebate and 2 yr contract.  I went to Sprint to talk to them about setting up a plan a few weeks ago and the salesperson said that the Instinct will probably be about $250 after a contract and rebate.  This was soon after Apple announced the cost of the new i phone.  Since then I’ve read that it will be $199 after rebate and contract, and now the new low price.  Also, it will be compatible with the Everything plan, which is certainly cheaper than a similar plan for AT&T;.  Since you don’t have to extend your contract to switch to the everything plan, you probably also don’t have to extend it to buy the phone.

That being said, however, it was obvious that the people in the video were having problems with the touch screen on the phone, and I don’t know who they work for, but I found it slightly suspicious that no one in the videos mentioned that fact though it was completely obvious.  I definitely hope they have that worked out by, well, now because the phone is released today, because I certainly plan on buying one.  It’s the poor man’s i phone, and, well, I’m cheap.

Posted on June 20, 2008

Russellmania Says:

Ok, let’s break it down.  Yes Sprint should have waited to release the Instinct until the touch screen was more user friendly (It was a big mistake on there part), but according to Sprint they have made the appropriate adjustments.

Stop complaining about how Instinct feels light and cheap when the new IPhone will be lighter as well do to its new fangled construction, PLASTIC!!

In reference to comparing features of each phone, the current Instinct is a clear winner (not in ALL categories, but most).  Even when the new IPhone is released Instinct will have some advantages (ie. Navigation).  This is the first generation Instinct and I am sure we will see great things for its future as well.

The Instinct is a great alterative for those who despise Apple, as well as those who never wanted to buy into the IPhone hype.  The IPhone will always be the original, but look out; the Instinct is coming after you!!

Don’t knock it until you try it, I have an Iphone and my girlfriend just purchased the samsung instinct and in comparison with the so many complaints about the touch sensitivity.  It works great and no delays involved, I’ve tested the instinct myself and the navigation works wonders its real time traffic which reduces your time of travel. The music feature works great and while being able to access other applications like texting and online browsing. Still comparing

on the instinct you can adjust the sensitivity to touch.  most likely the woman showing the phone on the video is not the brightest and didn’t adjust hers properly.

macmaestro Says:

I have to agree with mrpoole.  I’m a huge mac geek myself and would love to have an iphone, but not until they’re with a better carrier.  I’m a happy Sprint customer of 10 years, and if it ain’t broke, don’t tinker with it!  From what friends and family have experienced, ATT sucks so hard it leaves giant purple hickies.  I picked up the Instinct last week and I love it.  I think both phones are great, and each has certain advantages over the other.  But pros and cons aside, I’ll wait on the iPhone until they’re not on ATT.

bousozoku Says:

I tried to the Samsung Instinct today while I was waiting in the Sprint store.  It’s like the LG Voyager on Verizon: interesting, but flawed.

It’s obvious that Samsung has taken some time to evaluate Apple’s software and Instinct is a much better phone than say, my A900, which they also made.  However, the problem is that it’s still crude and inflexible.

Sprint has the network advantage and Apple is stuck with AT&T;.  I don’t want either phone right now.

All you Instinct haters are hilarious, say what you will to make yourself feel better for buying a $600 iphone, even the new one that just came out is having problems. My new instinct rules and i only paid $149, and I’ve had no problems. I’ve compared it to the Iphone and it puts it to shame. For those of you who say it’s a knock off, Give me a break! Everything’s a knock of,f someone always comes up with something better. LOL

Both phones have a lot to offer... Says:

I have been following both phones and here some differences I found…

Instinct
no wifi
video camera
gps software is embedded in phone - I think!
$70 for all internet, text, applications, 400 min b4 7pm
$130 (after rebate) with new / upgrade 2yr contract
Store data on the included 2GB removable memory card. Up to 8GB cards supported
Get over 30 music channels. Watch live TV and video-on-demand with full-motion video and vivid sound. Catch the latest news, sports, weather, entertainment and movie trailers on the go.
The Speech to Action feature let’s you store voice reminders and say the name of any entry in your phone book and the number is dialed.
Sprint Mobile Broadband Network download 600 kbps - 1.4 Mbps upload 350 kbps - 500 kbps
(According to http://www.sprint.com/business/products/products/evdoEnterZip.jsp )

Iphone
no video camera - why not? second iphone version and this got left out?…
wifi
$90 internet, text, applications, 400min
$200+ (depending which iphone you want) for new / upgrade contract
OSX
Edge Data rates for GSM Evolution with typical speeds of 75 to 135 kbps
3G speed is not available in my area :-( - at least yet?
(According to http://www.wireless.att.com/coverageviewer/ - I live in the bay area, not boonies - CA)
3G data speeds? Was unable to find it on the above website…
No mobile tv (is this music or video streaming?) in my area either
More application options

Bottom line?

All depends on what the phone is really going to be used for…

Internet? Instinct is the winner due to the bandwidth, music & tv channels in my area.

Price? I think Instinct beats it no matter what…

Applications? Iphone, but then again if you want it for work, don’tyou really need a treo / pda?

Integration with Itunes? Iphone

GPS? Instinct (if it’s embedded). I was told Iphone runs off mapquest, so if internet goes dead so does your destination. Does this also apply to Instinct? Dunno…

WiFi? Iphone, but if both carriers make you get internet, then what’s the point? I just read AT&T;said hotpots were available but then deleted the article - wtf? http://blog.wired.com/gadgets/2008/07/att-teases-ipho.html

Customize? I don’t think either phones lets you modify menu view, color, number character - shame on both of you…

Sensitivity? I tested both phones, I found no issue…

Faster internet? I guess it all bottled down to where you live - you live in the boonies? Most likely SOL on both phones…

If my sources are incorrect, please provide correct information…

Bottom line, again? Each phone fits different shoes...find out your coverage area for your needs, first of all…

Both phones have big cons & pros, but Instinct wins for my needs!!

Hope this info helps some of you…
