Earlier this week Apple’s iTunes vice president Eddy Cue threatened (at least vaguely) to close the iTunes Store if the Copyright Royalty Board raised the royalties paid to music publishers, rather than be forced into absorbing an increase in royalty rates and raising song prices.
Not to worry. The U.S. Copyright Royalty Board voted on Thursday to leave the current royalty payment rates in place instead of raising them to 15 cents per song, up from 9.1 cents. Additionally, the CRB set a payment rate of 24 cents each for songs sold as ringtones for cellphones., reports MarketWatch.
