Review: Would you put your iPod in a Cute Stinky?

iStyles’ 2007 iStyles Sleeve Collection for the iPod fall into the category of products that either appeal to you or don’t. My wife and daughter like ‘em, but they’re a bit too frou-frou for me and my son, so maybe it’s just a male-female thing.
The skins come in a variety of colors and designs and are designed to stylishly protect your iPod (both generations of nanos, the 5G iPod, the 4G version and the upcoming iPhone). Pricing starts at US$9.99, so they’re affordable. However, though I’m secure in my manhood and have been known to wear pink shirts on occasion, the iStyles’s Sleeves for iPod look a little too much like a designer change purse for me.
Sure, it might prevent my iPod from dings and scratches, but I don’t think the guys on my softball team would let me live it down if I showed up for a game with my iPod in an Autumn Leave, Chocolate Swirl or Princess Sparkle skin. On the other hand, my daughter Katie and my wife Laura have no compunctions about slipping their iPods into a Pebbles, Softy Pink or Versailles Purple sleeve and heading out on the town. Admittedly, I might use the Cute Stinky sleeve (shown), but maybe that’s just me.
Available in a number of different styles, constructed of either microfibers or leather, the iStyles Sleeve has an opening at the top for you to slide your iPod in. The microfiber on the interior is designed to “not only protect the iPod from scratches, but also polishes and cleans the device.” I couldn’t ascertain the latter claim, but the iStyles do a decent enough job of protecting the Apple device from scratches. They also sport a multi-purpose slit can be used to hold earphones or any other objects of a similar size. Looks aside, I also wish the iStyles sleeves had a drawstring. They don’t, and this means there’s no way to ensure that the iPod stays in the case while it’s in a purse or bag. Other than that, the sleeves have a simple purpose and do it well. Whether they do it in a style that’s your style is a personal choice.
