Review: Proporta Advanced Screen Protector for the MacBook Air a mixed bag

Proporta’s the Advanced Screen Protector for the MacBook Air may be the cat’s meow for some people (and I know that reference just dated me severely), but it just doesn’t do it for me.
The US$15.95 protector is designed to prevent scratching and other damage to the MacBook Air’s screen. It also reduces glare from sunlight or bright lighting. It can be washed and replaced. Proporta includes everything you need in the package. A cloth to clean your MacBook Air screen before application, the screen protector itself and an application card to smooth it down with. Needless to say, Proporta sends you the whole shebang with the package.
I guess it’s a lack of grace in my fingers, but I had a devil of a time applying the Advanced Screen Protector. It took me what seemed like an eternity trying to smooth out the air bubbles between the MB Air’s screen and the screen protector. And though Proporta says the protector is removable, I had an equally hard time removing it. Not that it has any “glue” that holds it to the laptop’s display, I just had a problem getting an edge of the Advanced Screen Protector pried up to peel the whole thing off.
Also, I have to admit I don’t find such protectors especially useful. They can potentially safeguard the laptop’s display during an accident, but they also get just as many fingerprints and smudges as the laptop itself. Why not just clean the portable’s screen? On the other hand, the Advanced Screen Protector did a decent job in reducing glare from sunlight when I took my MacBook Air into the back yard.
If you use your MacBook Air outdoors frequently or in bright lighting conditions, I’d recommend the Proporta cover. Ditto if you tend to drop or bang it around a lot. Otherwise, I think most laptop users will make it just fine without one.
