iLugger a sweet companion for the iMac G5

imageOn a recent weekend to visit my parents and my ailing aunt, I carried an iMac G5 with me, thanks to the iLugger carry case from LTA [Lighter Than Air] Projects. It was a 20-inch iMac, so I wouldn’t want to haul it as I hoofed it through an airport (though you could since the iLugger fits the airline carry-on specs).

However, I would consider carrying a 17-inch iMac G5 with me to, say, this summer’s Macworld Conference & Expo in Boston. The smaller model weights 18.5 pounds compared to the 20-incher’s 25.2 pounds. With PowerBook G5s nowhere in sight, the iMac/iLugger combo makes for a workable, portable G5 system. In fact, I know folks into pro video who are doing so.

But let me back up. The iLugger is a US$99 soft carrying bag for both sizes of iMac G5. It offers thick padded protection. It packs one-inch medium density around the front and sides with more rigid high impact foam on the back and bottom for shape and higher shock absorbency. All webbing is two or 2.5 inches wide.

There are separate pockets for a keyboard and miscellaneous hardware. The iLugger is made of 100 Denier Cordura fabric and has a removable shoulder strap. You can get the case in either black or gray. It’s a breeze to use (especially with the smaller iMac G5). Here’s what you do:

° Pull the bag down over the top with the flap and the pockets on the backside of the computer.

° For the 17-inch iMac, leave the pockets behind the pedestal.

° For a 20-inch iMac, pull the pockets forward to give more space for the larger pedestal between them.

° Pull your mouse and miscellaneous cables in one pocket and the keyboard in the other.

° Pull the “duckbill” pocket over the pedestal foot.

° Zip it up and you’re ready to roll.

For a video of the iLugger being used, go to the Macsimum Newscast and download or view the Jan. 6 edition.

The iLugger is one of those products that simply does what it’s designed to do and does it well. It’s reasonably priced and makes a nice companion piece for Apple’s most elegant Mac. Even if you only transport your iMac G5 occasionally, the iLugger offers more durable, dependable protection than just putting it back into its original box and hauling it around.

Macsimum rating: 10 out of 10.
