Review: Cases are U-Suitable for new iPods

imageUNIEA has released a line of U-Suit cases for the revamped iPod line: the third generation iPod nano, the iPod classic and the iPod touch. All are solid, reasonably priced cases—US$29.95, $29.95 and $34.95, respectively—that offer good protection if no unique features.

The cases have a soft leather exterior that feels good to the touch and makes the iPod more “grippable.” They’re lined with a hard ABS plastic interior so maintain their shape even when the iPod isn’t inserted. The interior of the U-Suits have a scratch resistant inner lining, according to the folks at UNIEA—and that seems to be accurate. I’ve yet to notice any scratches on my various test iPods.

With the cases you have complete access to the iPod’s controls, screen and docking port. That’s part of the problem. With the exception of the U-Suit for the classic, the cases don’t come with a screen protector. And the iPod touch’s gorgeous 3.5-inch display is big enough that it can be easily scratched. The U-Suit is the first touch case I’ve reviewed, so there may be a reason for not including a screen protector. But I can’t think of what it might be.

The U-Suit for the touch includes a non-detachable nub on the back; the ones for the 3G nano and the classic don’t. The touch U-Suit allows you to attach a belt clip that swivels, so you can stand the iPod vertically or horizontally. That’s convenient for viewing videos. However, you can also view video on the 3G nano and the classic, so I’m not sure why there’s no similar attachment for them.

The U-Suits do exactly what they’re designed to so, and the prices are right. And if they fail to blow me away, you have to understand that, after all the cases I’ve reviewed, few cases do anymore.

Macsimum rating: U-Suit for the iPod touch: 6 out of 10

U-Suit for the 3G iPod nano: 7 out of 10

U-Suit for the iPod classic: 8 out of 10
