QuickBooks for Macs causing data loss

If you use QuickBooks 2006 or 2007 for the Mac, don’t launch it, warns ZD Net. An apparent bug in the software update code causes the accounting software to throw a vague “you don’t have enough memory” dialog after attempting to download a 100k update while it simultaneously deletes your desktop folder.

The “update” at the root of this issue hasn’t been issued by Intuit, and the recommended course of action for all QuickBooks 2006 and 2007 users is to run the terminal command as detailed at the bottom of a post at the Tuaw web site. This will turn off all automatic updates and prevent whatever this is from installing on your system. The best course of action for QuickBooks for Mac users apparently is simply to not launch the software.

Jeff Says:

Intuit has released a patch to correct the issue and now acknowledged that the patch does not resolve the issue.  I’ve personally been using FileSalvage from SubRosaSoft.com to recover my client’s lost data.  It’s been very successful thus far.  What a mess.  Just another reason to always keep a current backup.
