For its financial quarter that ended in June, Apple sold 717,000 iPhone units compared to 270,000 in the year-ago-quarter. Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer pointed out that Apple sold a million iPhone 3Gs in just three days compared to 74 days for the first gen iPhone.
He said that customer reaction to the updated device and the new Apple App Store has been overwhelmingly positive. Oppenheimer said that over 25 million apps had been downloaded from the new store. The store has over 900 products—20 percent are free and 90 percent are under $10, he adds.
Oppenheimer also expects Apple to sell more iPhones in the September quarter than it has in any previous quarter. The CFO pointed out that, as with the original iPhone, iPod 3G revenue is deferred over the course of 24 months for each sale.
