Purple Violets, the upcoming romantic comedy from writer-director-actor Edward Burns, will go on sale exclusively at the iTunes Store on Nov. 20. It’s the first time a feature film will make its commercial debut on Apple’s digital download service.
Purple Violets had its premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in April, it drew positive reviews, but only lukewarm offers from movie distributors, according to the International Herald Tribune.
Burns, the director of indie favorites like “The Brothers McMullen” and “She’s the One,” but whose latest movies have not done as well, knew from experience how that story would end. “Not enough money to market the film, not a wide-enough release to even make a dent in the movie-going public’s consciousness,” he told the Herald Tribune.
The film’s debut may help iTunes’ profile as a video store, the article adds. What’s more, in September, the iTunes Store began distributing a 13-minute short film, Hotel Chevalier, a prequel of sorts to Wes Anderson’s Darjeeling Limited, as a publicity vehicle for that Fox Searchlight feature. The Herald Tribune says that the short, offered free, has since been downloaded more than 400,000 times and has helped drive the early box office performance of Darjeeling the studio says.
Purple Violets has a well-known cast, including Selma Blair, Patrick Wilson, Debra Messing, Dennis Farina and Donal Logue among others.
Submissions are being taken for the “Macsimum Macworld San Francisco 2008 Coupon Book.” For details email Dennis at daseller@earthlink.net
