The rumors are rampant that Apple will unveil a “MacBook Thin” subcompact laptop at next month’s Macworld Conference & Expo in San Francisco. So in this week’s poll we’re asking: do you buy an Apple ultraportable?
Last week we asked you planned to buy an Apple product during the holidays. Twenty-percent of you said “yes, one product.” Forty-six percent said “yes, more than one product.” And 25 percent said “no.”
The Click Source Says:
Absolutely ... I owned a PowerBook Duo and love them when they were the bomb. The MacBook Thin is definitely on my radar

Seven or eight years ago I definitely would have. On another site several of us engaged in endless wishful thinking for something like this. I still think it is a great idea but my particular needs have changed and now I carry around a 17” MBP.
This could be a great product for people who have moderate computing needs. If you are not rendering movies most of the day or engaged in design projects then this fills the bill. With the current processor power even a 16GB memory capacity could be fine. That is plenty to build Keynote presentations, write papers, take notes, research with Google, calculate with spread sheets. And it is light enough to carry around so that it is always ready for a presentation or for note taking. Back at your desk in the office or dorm you’d have a larger backup disk to offload larger projects.
If this is just 2 or 2-1/2 lbs and has WiFi, Bluetooth, USB and Firewire and video out it would be fantastic.

I will be one of the first to buy. There are many variables which could make it more or less attractive, but a small, light Mac is just what I need. Easy syncing would be important. With .Mac this should work well.

no. i see no reason for such a device. if i’m going anywhere that i would need such a device, i’m just going to take my 15” macbookpro. to me, a device either needs to be small enough to fit in your pocket, or big enough so the screen size is reasonable to work on. anything in between is pointless.

I’d like a replacement for my 12” PowerBook and 12” iBook. But I’m wary of only 16 GB of storage. The 10 GB drive on the iBook was always a challenge. I suppose I could live without a built-in optical drive, but a portable optical drive would be a necessity for me. But any new ultraportable needs to have more than 1024 x 768 pixels!

Is ultra p the next-gen multi-touch? I’d buy that! Jobs hates buttons, Jobs wants something new, MT in a full-sized Macbook is still prohibitive. What about an ultra-port with the leap in versatility possible with multi-touch? The appeal? The ability to do many things differently with a degree of flexibility hindered by hardware interfaces. Iphone has blazed the trail. If not at this MacWorld, soon - I think it’s only a matter of time.

Yes, with a caveat.
Only if it uses a 128GB SSD. The 64GB is a bit on the small side. I would buy it with the larger drive for $1800, but I don’t think it will be offered with the large drive. I’ll bet battery life is fantastic.
I really like using my MacBook Pro C2D 2.33 and haven’t had any problems with it for the seven or so months I’ve had it.
