Warner Home Video will include two downloadable digital files on its Dec. 11 DVD release of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix that will allow buyers to download the film to a computer or a portable device. This makes Warner the first studio to “so marry physical media and downloads,” reports Video Business.

Jim Wuthrich, Warner senior vice president of digital distribution, unveiled the development at Tuesday’s DVD Forum conference in Universal City, California, as he discussed the studio’s plans to meet what it sees as a growing consumer demand for digital content. “You can buy the DVD and have the option of the digital copy,” he said. “This future-proofs the format for consumers.”

Video Business reports that Wuthrich estimated that consumer digital spending will total US$300 million in 2007. In 2008, that will grow to $600 million and $900 million in 2009.

Submissions are being taken for the “Macsimum Macworld San Francisco 2008 Coupon Book.” For details email Dennis at daseller@earthlink.net

Hello Windows-only DRM!  It’s probably faster to RIP the DVD into a portable, open format than it is to download these crippled files from Warner.

And it’s “future-proofed” as long as MS keeps supporting the DRM format AND for whatever actual “rights” Warner has deemed that you are permitted to have.

And say goodbye to privacy, as you’ll probably have to give up your personal info to download these files.
