New Apple laptops tomorrow?

Reliables sources tell Macsimum News that the MacBook and MacBook Pro will be revved as early as Tuesday, May 6. We haven’t confirmed this yet, but keep an eye out.
iJavaJoe Says:
I for one will be VERY angry if they are release this soon. With the recent upgrade to the MacBook Pro a little over a month ago, I was very confidant there wouldn’t be another upgrade for about 4 months (at least).
I understand Tech is a fast moving target, but this would be “almost” unheard of in the Apple market ($100 iPhone price drop). If the upgrade is tomorrow I want a replacement!

I want new Macbooks!!!!!!!!!!
The actual design seems oudated and have some problems that need to be fixed urgently…
I delayed my purchase from two months after read these issues. I can´t wait more!!!

I hate the people who demand a replacement if tech is updated “too soon” or if there is a price drop “too soon.” Here’s the fix. DON’T buy anything EVER and you’ll never have to worry about that problem.

But I will keep an eye out Apple.com refresh, refresh refresh :)

@iJavaJoe,
If new laptops came out tomorrow, it’ll be the first time in a little over 3 years that Apple’s pulled this stunt on its portable range. Don’t sweat it though - if the kit you bought was good enough for you yesterday, it’ll be much the same tomorrow - unless you bought it purely as a fashion statement? ;)

Logic Says:
JavaJoe, what is wrong with your current laptop? Nothing except it’s not the latest and greatest? (if new ones are indeed released tomorrow) If you can do everything you set out to do with your current laptop when you originally bought it, then please stop crying about how you may not have the newest model. That being said, I hope new ones are on the way.

Chris Says:
Guess: Most likely the FSB will be upgraded, here’s an excerpt from http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1462895&tstart=0
Montevina is going to replace the Santa Rosa platform later this year. The current crop of Penryn MacBook Pros are still on the Santa Rosa platform, which supports 667Mhz DDR2 RAM. The front side bus speed for Santa Rosa is 800Mhz.
Montevina’s front side bus speed will be 1066Mhz and it will support 800Mhz DDR3 RAM. This is the last platform that will use front side bus technology.
Calpella, which will replace Montevina in 2009, will replace the 20-year-old “front side bus” with a new technology called QuickPath Interconnect. This will provide orders of magnitude more bandwidth between the CPU and all devices connected to the computer. It should provide massive performance improvements over today’s machines.

@Java
I sooo hope new laptops come out tomorrow. I enjoy seeing cry babies get their pillows wet.
Apple offers a free refund if you purchased within 15 days of a model’s upgrade. This way you can get the latest and greatest. I you purchased after that time well then that’s just the way things are. You could live with your purchase before so why not TRY and love with it after the fact?
Posted on May 05, 2008
Gustav Says:
iJavaJoe, are you so shallow that you’ll be mad if you don’t have the latest and greatest? Do you actually want Apple to hold back just so you can feel better about your purchase a little longer? If the Mac you bought didn’t suit your needs then you shouldn’t have bought it. If you are angry, then only you are to blame, not Apple.
Geez, I wish these people would grow up already. I’ve seen 8 year old children more mature than this.

Guys don’t be too harsh on iJavajoe! Don’t you know that everytime Apple releases a new faster version of a Mac all products in that specific range lose 300 Mhz!
iJavajoe may have a screaming fast 2.5 Ghz Macbook Pro now but it will be downgraded to 1.1 Ghz by next year if Apple release at this blistering rate! THATS NOT ACCEPTABLE APLE I WAN MAI MONEY BACK!!!!!!

@Iava Joe
I for one will be VERY angry if there is a new version of the Washington Post tomorrow. With the last update to the newspaper a little over a day ago, I was very confident there wouldn’t be another issue for about 4 days (at least).
I understand that current events is a fast moving target, but this would be “almost” unheard of in the newspaper market (the recent increase in the Sunday edition). If the tomorrow’s edition has new news in it, I want a replacement!
<end of silliness> This is a fast paced business, and sometimes the merry-go-round goes fast enough to make us dizzy. Just buy one, wait two years, buy another.

Marc Says:
@iJavaJoe
The last update was in February. It is now May. I believe that fits into your 4 month minimum requirement. I am not sure if I believe this or not but don’t forget that Apple doesn’t have that much control over processors and since Intel is switching to a smaller size processor (I think) among other things, Apple may have no choice but to bump the change into place. I suspect that as with the iMacs, the changes will not be that substantial.

iJavaJoe Says:
I’ve had 2 - 17” PowerBooks with the same form factor as the machine I’m typing on right now 17” 2.6ghz MacBook Pro (which is BTW very, very cool). I waited 3 years to pick up this computer hoping not only for a speed improvement but also a nice design tweak. And to EVERYONE, YES, style is important, if not, then we would all be driving black Honda Accords or using Windows.
I wanted something that looks different cuz I like “style”, and this is likely to be my last computer. Since my time seems to be growing short, (so the Dr.’s say, stage 4), it was more important to get something much faster then to wait for a styling update even though I was looking for both. I want to do things the old Powerbook just wasn’t cutting anymore and I don’t have the time to wait for the “perfect” machine of the moment.
I’ve used Macs for 20 years and been responsible for purchase of well over 100 during that time. First and foremost it’s been about how well the machine works, but how it looks has sold more then a couple handfuls of machines.
I’d still be surprised if there are “Pro” changes before June, I really won’t be demanding anything, and to be honest won’t be angry in any event, perhaps disappointed, but just a little. :)…
P.S. It was kinda funny to see all the “lather” my first post created, WoW!

I’m not going to be too disappointed. You know it would probably be a big change if they release new ones tomorrow, and the fact is I never buy the first generation of a new form factor. Remember the new aluminum Intel Macbook Pros and all the heat problems? Things like that aren’t an option for me.

Marianne Says:
For everyone who’s saying than an update this soon would be unprecedented… What about the BS they just pulled with the MacBooks? Previous update had been November 1, then suddenly they updated them on February 26 with the MBPs, which in my eyes mad the update useless because, aside from screen size and video card, the two lines became way too close in specs. So I’d welcome a MBP update any day, as long as they don’t upgrade the MB again for a while.
Posted on May 05, 2008
Steevo Says:
Oooh. Let’s hope they never upgrade their laptop line again - that way we’ll never be upset that our current one is outdated.
Yeah - like that makes any sense.
How is updating their product (or ANY other company doing the same thing) BS, Marianne?
Posted on May 06, 2008
macman Says:
So its May 6th, where are the new designed macbook and macbook pro?
Posted on May 06, 2008
Marianne Says:
I thought it was BS because it pretty much cancelled out the differences between the two lines. The MB had just had a refresh, and the MBP were overdue one. It seemed unfair. It made it seem as though the MBPs hadn’t even been updated because aside from the video card and screen size, their specs were waaaay too close to the MB line. And while screen size and graphics card are a major reason to get a MBP, it shouldn’t be the only reason.
macman: It’s May 6, barely 9 AM here in California. Where Apple is based. I’m going to wait until about 11:00 before deciding this was a false alarm.

May not be here today, but on the way. It seems the Montevina boards will be out on desktop first, then laptop. Look at the release dates for iMac & MBP, they match back to 2005. The MBP update in Feb was based on moving to the smaller Penryn chips, the current die was out of production. This is why it is listed as the 2008 “early” release of the MBP. Montevina officialy releases first of June, so guess what? If you just bought, you should hope for a release SOON. You may have time to exchange up. The longer it takes, you’re likely sol.

So June 1 release could stretch to the Apple Developer Connection conference on June 9. My gut feel is that there will be an upgrade then and I will be happy to see the next generation (Air keyboard, more aluminium, chippy internals upgraded etc) and hopefully a drop dead sexy beast of a machine.

(desperate, i guess?)
on the other hand, if they ARE true, then..

The sooner Apple puts out the new MacBook line (with refreshed casing), the sooner they get my money. My 5 year old Vaio is on its last legs and this former PC user is keeping it resuscitated until the day the new line comes out. I doubt I’m the only one. I think that this product line update will be the turning point for many former PC users. I tend to keep laptops for years, so I will sit tight for the major refresh, though.

Sorry for people that just buy a new MC w/o know what is going on. I know that is difficult and boring, but it is always worth to search for info and, of course, wait IF YOU DO NOT NEED TO BUY IT RIGHT NOW!
I never had an Apple and, as many people around, I am waiting for the “Montevina” macbooks, hopefully with new alluminium case, backlit keyboard and LED illumination of LCD.
For those who is crying: It has been published in many sites and for many months that Intel would push Montevina throat down for all PC manufacturers (including, of course, Apple), just because Santa Rosa will be killed by Intel until end of the year, imposing a new refresh in all Macbooks in 2008.
Apple might not even want to refresh their line right now, but due to Intel, they will be forced!!!

I can understand people being upset though, if they just dropped 2g’s on the latest and greatest. Can you blame them? That’s a lot of money to though down for it to updated after you walk out the store. I’m really starting to hate my windows computer, and its the cost of the apple that makes me wait. I want the biggest bang for my buck.
Not everybody has money just to throw around like its no big deal. That’s why people are pissed.
But with that said, if they are going to update, then update it already, and enough with these rumors.

I’m also very keen to upgrade (I’m still on G4). I buy Apple partly for the industrial design quality, and I have found that if I buy the top of the range in the new design machine it is usable and presentable to clients for a good three years, this is about double what I would expect from a PC laptop. My sense is that Apple will wait until the WWDC in June before releasing the new MacBook Pro.

The upgrade is going to be that it is going to look like a MacBook Air. So buy your MacBook 12 days before the 9th of May when they release the new MacBook and when they come out with it call apple. Hoped this helped:)

As I thought the “reported” MacBook, MacBook pro update did not happen, it would have been WAY, WAY to soon.
The “NEW” upgrade rumor: http://9to5mac.com/macbook_upgrade_schedule has things posted for July-September. Steve “might” pull something at WWDC, but probably not. At WWDC You will see iPhone (if not sooner), and possible MacMini updates, perhaps even an iPod (iPod Touch?) as well as PRE announcement for 10.6 “##### Cat”! The Warmest, fuzziest, friendliest OS ever built; “It purrs when you use it!”
Apple tends to make updates in a 4 to 6 month increment. The last Macbook updates were Feb 28th; Given 4 months, start looking early-mid June. This also co-insides with BackToSchool, Apples favorite time for Notebook updates!
For the Apple computer update schedule (when they last upgraded this Mac) checkout : http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/
This site has been the BEST indicator of Apple upgrade/update trends. Note the Mac Mini, if they don’t phase it out this would be RIPE for an update at WWDC!

Ben Says:
Where does it say on the apple website that they will honour a 14 day return on bringing out a new model and where is the best place to look for news on June 9th?
Posted on May 17, 2008
iJavaJoe Says:
Damian,
These “CONFIRMED”, I know somone that knows what Steve is going to announce stuff is, well, to put it lightly, a load! Everyone knows someone inside Apple who has his/her hands on EXACTLY what is coming out. I think it’s just a way to get attention. The ONLY one that REALLY know is Steve himself. I’ve read about his “announcement days” and he sometimes doesn’t know for sure what he will be able to announce until the last minutes before he gets on stage!
As to my WWDC speculation it is based on previous announcements and what’s in the news. For example, we’ve all read the current iPhone is HARD to get, (BTW if you really want one now, order from ATT, they have some current models as of yesterday, but only 1 per customer)! So with current iPhone’s running out, and Steve, ATT and Walt Mossberg all pretty much saying new iPhones around June, it doesn’t take much to figure new iPhones at WWDC!
As to Macbook / Macbook pros Apple get’s something updated in the portables just about every summer (July/August), this isn’t speculation just past Apple history.
Ben,
There’s no one “GREAT” source for the WWDC announcements. Anything you read about that “WILL” be announced is rumor and speculation. Steve will announce what Steve announces and that’s that! That being said you can get some pretty good speculation by reading several web sites. Macworld, Apple enthusiast, Apple rumors, this site, etc.! NOTE: BEWARE of CONFIRMING reports! Often the Apple news sites FEED off each, confirming themselves when in reality they are just re-reporting what another site reported.
So take with a grain of salt what you read that WILL be announced. Remember Steve won’t announce that one thing that you REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY want (1/2” 8x12” Mac Tablet) so don’t be disappointed by what’s NO announced as there will be some cool stuff that will be announced.
Summery of iJavaJoe’s “speculation” of WWDC:
new 3G iPhone, iPhone software update, Pre 10.6 announcement, .Mac update.
VERY Speculative:
Mac Mini, Portable updates,
In my Wildest Dream:
Mac tablet (please, steve, please!)

Apples return policy:
http://store.apple.com/us/help/returns_refund?mco=MTE2NDI
NOTE: They may charge a 10% restocking fee at their discretion. If you’re nice and returning for a replacement, updated equipment, they are even nicer and generally won’t charge, but they CAN! Apple plays pretty good here.
Posted on May 17, 2008
Ben Says:
Sorry my post may not have been quite clear. I didn’t mean where is the best place to look for speculation, i meant where is the best place to look on june 9th for the actual announcements. I realise now that that may have been a stupid question, the apple website will surely have the most accurate information. At what time though on that day will the keynote be? Also, do apple stores have products in their stores on the day of announcement usually or is there a delay? And judging by previous releases, will the price of the Macbook rise on it’s next release, whenever that may be?
Posted on May 17, 2008

Oh so it’s not actual policy then. Probably not worth the risk, as nice as apple may be.

Last year I watched the live “TEXT” based coverage on Macworld and Engadget. Engadget was the best.
I WATCHED the posted video at Apple, later. They don’t post it for a few hours. Apples site will tell you of new products after the keynote, but it may be hard to figure exactly what was said unless you read the live coverage, the post coverage and or watch the Apple vid!

El Jabon,
Thats cool, I wasn’t meaning to be harsh towards either of you or anything. You sounded a bit hostile now? Sorry if anything I said offended you. I wait in great anticipation for June 9!! :)

I have a PowerBook G4 and am ready to upgrade to an MBP. (Cash in hand. Burning a hole in my pocket.) I’m torn between buying the current MBP and waiting to see what happens at WWDC. If an entirely new design comes out, i’m not likely to buy it since I’ve seen too many problems with 1st gen macs in my days. Yet, if a slight bump comes out and the one i want drops in price because of that, i’d want to wait to save a couple bucks and get my ram up to 4GB. On the other hand, if a new design comes out, i might lose the opportunity to buy the existing MBP. Help. I’m stuck deciding.
P.S. It would help to know that i love my PowerBook; especially the silver keys...except for my “hot wrists” and these damn clouds on the monitor (yes, i got one of those...and no, i never replaced the screen when it was under Applecare.) Even though the “imagined” redesigned MBPs look sexy, again, i’m not into 1st gen, i’m not wild about the new keyboard and i don’t care about blueray (if it had it.)

Wait ‘till WWDC! if something is announced make the decision then. More info is better, it’s only days away, and yes there should be a little price break for the older models, if new ones are announced, but new pricing might take a week or two.
Also, note the Macbook Air is a new model, not just a redesign, and so far, aside from a “sharp edge” that can cut bread :} I’ve heard of no big problems with it. Perhaps I missed some problem? So an updated model might not be so bad to get right away!

Well, the WWDC has already happened and no laptop, so people tell me that a new laptop is coming out on July 14, but I need a laptop soon, so should I wait - again, or buy one now???

@Lucas
According Intel, they will release the new processors on july 14. Depending on how quickly apple manages to test and manifacture the macbooks you’re probably looking towards a release from mid-august onwards.
I am also waiting for the new MBP and I am planning to wait as long as I can and then buy one, old or new! I cant tell you what to do, but if you buy one now you wont be to disappointed because the update will only be a minor ‘speed bump’ (according to the majority of the rumors). The main update will be with the introduction of intels nehalem processors in feb 2009.
Hope this helped!
