Movie review: ‘Flawless’ isn’t but still fun

It’s hard not to poke fun at the title of Flawless, a film that certainly isn’t. However, this crime/data set in 1960 London at least aspires to offer something different and serves up some fleeting pleasures.
In the film, directed by Michael (The Merchant of Venice, Il Postino) Radford from Edward Anderson’s screenplay, Demi Moore plays Laura Quinn, a bright, driven executive at the London Diamond Corp. who finds herself bumping against the glass ceiling, seeing men promoted before her despite her better qualifications and years of devotion to the company. Michael Caine is Hobbs, the nighttime janitor at London Diamond who is virtually invisible to the executives that work there, but who, over the years, has amassed a amount of knowledge about how the company runs. The two decide to team up and steal enough diamonds to live on comfortably, but not enough that the megabucks company will even know they’re missing. Naturally, things go awry.
The two leads are well cast and interact well together. There are some clever twists in Flawless, though some of the turns are predictable. The film is also hampered by a clumsy framing device and the fact that it loses steam after the heist. However, the heist itself is wonderfully staged and shot. It, the sometimes-sparkling dialog and the 60s feel make Flawless a fun diversion if far from a perfect one.
Flawless is rated PG-13 for brief strong language. Running time: 108 minutes. Macsimum rating: 6 out of 10. You can check out the film’s trailer on the QuickTime movie trailer site.
