imageMCE Technologies will release an US$799, 1TB internal hard drive kit for the 17-inch MacBook Pro on May 16.

According to MCE, the MCE OptiBay Hard Drive is a high performance laptop hard drive inside a specially designed, lightweight case that’s been engineered to the exact same dimensions as the laptop’s SuperDrive or Combo drive. The drive responds to S.M.A.R.T. status commands from the Mac OS. S.M.A.R.T. status commands query a drive’s internal reliability algorithms and can, therefore, warn of possible impending disk failure before it happens giving you enough time to archive your data before it’s lost.

This MCE OptiBay Hard Drive contains two 500GB internal hard disk drives. One replaces the MacBook Pro’s regular internal drive. The other is part of a kit that resides in the SuperDrive bay, replacing the internal optical drive.
