The MacAppADay web site, a free source of Mac software, is giving away 5,000 copies of a Mac app every day throughout December. And Macsimum readers are invited to participate a day early. The first free app: TuneX by developer Tom Hancocks, and Macsimizers can download it here; the password is “macosken.”
Tune X is an application that allows access to iTunes in any application whenever you want. You can view song information and progress, play, pause, change tracks, change the volume, set ratings, switch playlists, and search your library. It requires Mac OS X 10.4, iTunes 6.0 or later and Growl if you plan on using Growl notifications.
“The idea of giving away popular Mac OSX applications for free, or with extended trials is great for the end user,” Hancocks says. “It means they don’t need to dig into their pockets and bank accounts to get their hands on some of the great software that has been lined up. It’s also beneficial to the developers who have offered to contribute to this line up. Not only does it give further awareness of the applications, but also will give the users a better taste of the software, and hopefully encourage further sales of the applications in the future. It’s a win-win deal for both the users and developers.”
A new app will be released at midnight (Pacific) every day during the event. The folks at MacAppADay say that this isn’t a competition. To score some free software, you just need to visit the site each day starting Dec. 1 (or today, for Macsimum readers). And there’s a bonus on New Year’s.
