This week, I’m going to show you how to move The Video Sandbox widget that I developed awhile back, from your Dashboard to your desktop, so you can conveniently watch this uniquely entertaining podcast while you’re working. The widget will float right on top of any windows you currently have open.

First, open your Terminal application in your Utilities folder, copy and paste the following command and hit “return.”

defaults write com.apple.dashboard devmode YES

Next, log out and back in, or reboot. (Your Dashboard needs to be restarted.) Once your back running, press your F12 Dashboard key to open the Dashboard. Now, click on The Video Sandbox video widget and drag it around. While you’re still dragging it around (keep that mouse button down!) press F12 again. Poof! Your Dashboard vanishes, but the widget’s still visible. Finely, position the widget where ever you want on your screen.

When you’re done watching, you can move the widget back into the Dashboard world by reversing the trick: begin dragging the widget, then, while still keeping the mouse button down, press F12, then let go of the mouse button. The widget will be restored to its regular Dashboard layer.

The actual size image to the right is what the video widget will look like floating on your desktop. The widget will automatically load the latest episode. If you wish to view older episodes, simply click on the little brown arrow (left of the start button) that points left.

Download the widget here and watch this week’s show (episode #95), as host Frank Petrie will be announcing a contest to give away a copy of “OS X Leopard: The Missing Manual” from O’reilly Media. Tune-in for your chance to win!

You can access The Video Sandbox Web site here.

Mac Owners Support Group—aka MacOSG—was conceived by Dave Merten, the former ‘Focus on Mac Support’ guide at About.com. Since it’s humble beginning as ‘G5 Owners Support Group’ back in February 2004, MacOSG has become one of the world’s fastest-growing online Apple User Groups, dedicated to helping Mac users from all over the globe.
