Mac users should watch ZFS development closely

imageSamsung and Microsoft are in talks to to speed up SSDs (solid state drives) on Windows Vista, reports Information Week.

While Samsung is now in talks with Microsoft to improve performance of SSD’s on Windows Vista, the article reports that Sun has already been working with Sun on improving performance of SSD’s with the ZFS (Zettabyte File System). That means that any improvements that Sun includes in ZFS will automatically be included in the upcoming Mac OS X Snow Leopard update.

But because Sun’s efforts are server focused, there is a question, in my mind, about whether or not the improvements will be available for the server and client versions or just the server version. Either way, it seems that it would be a good idea to watch ZFS development rather closely.

“Macsimum News” is a proud supporter of Planet Gumbo, which feeds the hungry. We urge you to help them in their efforts.

Good to hear that Sun is working with itself.

“Good to hear that Sun is working with itself.” It is like John McCain debating with himself about correct tire pressures to improve gas mileage!!!

ZFS could be the file system of the future — provided Apple and Microsoft are both solidly behind it. Imagine being able to transparently share storage devices between Mac OS X and Windows, without any of the current limitations or complexities! For multi-platform users, this can’t happen fast enough!

The article doesn’t say Microsoft is working with ZFS - just that both Sun(ZFS) and Microsoft are trying to make SSDs faster.
