Mac laptop sales up 34 percent, desktops down 25 percent

Okay, Apple, it’s time for some desktop revs. For the December quarter Apple sold over over 2.5 million Macs, a nine percent increase over the same period a year-ago. Laptop sales were up 34 percent year-over-year, but desktop sales were down 25 percent.
Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer says this is because portables are continuing to gain ground over desktop in the overall market. He also notes that the new “unibody” MacBooks and MacBooks Pro are very popular.
Also, comparing the December quarter sales must be compared to a year-ago quarter when desktop sales shot up 60 percent due to new iMacs. Seems it’s time to rev the line yet again, as well as the Mac mini and Mac Pros.
Oppenheimer also noted that the latest info from the IDC research group shows that the overall market for personal computers contracted by about 16 percent last quarter. So Apple is doing great compared to the overall market, he notes.
Chief Operating Officer noted that the Mac Pro comprised a small segment of Apple’s desktop line-up (which is dominated by the iMac). As for netbooks, Cook says Apple is looking at the market, but feels that, so far, consumers are disappointed in the underpowered systems that have appeared so far. Still, “Apple does have some ideas” in this regard, he added.
The K-12 education market has been weak in the past two quarters. Cook says he doesn’t see this picking up anytime soon until there’s a major infrastructure outlay “which, with a new President, we may see,” Cook added.
