Networkx has released the iPod BeamDock, a wireless sound solution for the iPod. Due in late February, the US$160 device will work as both an iPod dock and an audio audio input device that can connect to devices other than the iPod, such as stereo system or powered speakers.
The BeamDock uses digital encoding to transmit music from your iPod to your stereo equipment. It offers a typical signal range of up to 100 feet between BeamDock itself and the receiver, according to Networkx.
To use it, you just connect your iPod. The BeamDock’s rechargeable battery purportedly provides continuous audio playback of up to eight hours. When the battery gets low, you can connect the BeamDock power supply for charging it and your iPod simultaneously. The BeamDock will alert you to a low battery charge with an LED that switches from green to red when you need some juice.
The BeamDock features additional connectors, like FireWire and USB, to connect your iPod to your computer, which lets you use it as a regular docking station for your iPod. If you have music stored on a different device or an older generation iPod without a dock connector, the BeamDock can play audio from nearly any device using its integrated 3.5mm audio mini jack. You can connect a MiniDisc player, a portable CD player or a notebook for a presentation, and the Networkx device will beam the audio signal across the room into your stereo system.
