iPhone in January? And 50-inch Apple monitor

There was interesting news about the iPhone and other offerings from Apple on Friday’s edition of Mac OS Ken: The Preferred Podcast of Macsimum News. Speaking on condition of anonymity, a listener to Mac OS Ken with ties to the Mac maker says the company has enacted a hiring freeze in anticipation of hiring hundreds of telco managers to sell the iPhone.
An Apple employee tells the source that they have held both versions of the phone— which they expect to see launched in January, though they could not confirm that date. The same source tells Mac OS Ken that a monitor refresh in early 2007 will include a 50-inch monitor, presumably tied into the launch of Apple’s iTV.
Mac OS Ken is presented through media partners Macsimum News and The Apple Groups Team (TAGteam) and is available via the following outlets: Apple iTunes Music Store, direct download, on PodcastAlley.com or on on KYOU radio at 4 p.m (Pacific)/ 7 p.m. (Eastern), Monday-Friday.

I’ve been expecting the large format flat panel but was looking more like two years down. Apple is on the way to kicking Sony, Matsushita, Philips et al out of the living room. Now, they’re just waiting for average installed bandwidth to go up so they can start selling HD movie downloads.

As the list grows of new product announcements at Macworld I am reminded of the 2 hour time limit. It’s also rare for Jobs to reveal two different products for the first time in his Keynotes. He’s got to show off Leopard and give a summary of Apple’s performance for the year while giving time for demoes such as Adobe’s next products. With his plate loaded I am reluctant to expect the “iTV” or related products as it deserves, along with an iPhone, separate events. New monitors are overdue though. It would be anice compliment to a “video iPod”.

El Guano Says:
It matters mainly because of the resolution. A 50” TV would most likely be 1080p (or, a lower resolution than the 23” Cinema Display). A 50” monitor would need to have at least the resolution of the 30” Cinema Display, potentially more. It would also affect the price point, and as such, the target market.

Ænima Says:
I highly doubt the monitor thing would be true. For one thing Apple has kind of made their own standard that their monitors are all 100 ppi. A 50” at 100 ppi is fairly ridiculous at this point.

I’m afraid the rumors of the 50” display are completely wrong. The iPhone is certainly on the cards for early next year. I have to remain anonymous I’m afraid. All I can say is that I’m an Apple employee in the United Kingdom linked with R&D;.

I hate to be nit-picky but your text shouldn’t read that Mac OS Ken is available through “iTunes Music Store”, it’s just iTunes Store now. I thought I read that here.
Anyway, I can’t wait to sit in my living room, basking in the glow of 50” Front Row using my wireless iPod as a remote for an iTV (or whatever it will be called). I better start paying down my credit card.

Lor Says:
I beleieve that if Apple plans to release a 50” “monitor” that is 100ppi, they either came up with an ultra cheap production method or lowered the ppi of the display, making it more of a TV (which would kind-of make more sense seeing as it is supposed to compliment the iTV.) I am really looking forward to whatever it turns out to be anyways :)

If true...Apple should not keep it a secret...HDTV-LCDs are the hot thing this x-mas and high end buyers are already buying. A 46inch LCD is a long term purchase...not something someone would sell just for the Apple version. If just a monitor...seems a limited/professional target consumer. If a HDTV...Apple is already late to the market. Sometimes keeping secrets on products is negative to the bottom line!!!! As exampled by the release of iTV before it was ready to sell...but then that had to do with PR / stock prices as opposed to the product. The hype go so big Apple had no choice but to release the news...if they did’nt the stock would have dropped.

Those 640x480 movies are gonna look ridiculous on a 50inch screen. If this is gonna be part of Apple’s move into the living room, they’ll need to upgrade the video capabilities of the Mac Mini substantially as well (I can’t imagine the iTV outperforming a Mac Mini).

cvfoss is right, what the heck you going to hook it up to? and when are they going to roll out 1080p or even 720p res video on itunes?
why would they release a monitor for which they have no content to play in its native format.
apple is complete over-hype. this stuff keeps those wheels a turnin!

The Denver CEDIA Expo 2006 introduced a new home automation system called “Rosie” by Savany Systems LLC. One of the components that they provide is a Plasma television with a built in isights. Very much like the iMacs and MacBooks. http://www.savantav.com

I am sorry, this rumor sounds completely fake. For many reasons this makes no sense. 1. The movies would not fit the screen, Apple is about ease of use and components that work seamlessly together. Wrong size movies for a giant TV, dumb. 2. They will not start selling HD movies until: a. Mac Minis, at the least, roll out 200gb plus hdd’s, and b. download speeds for the average household double or triple in order to download such high quality moveis. Yes apple is making the transition to the living room, but I believe it will not be an automatic full transition rolling out an iTV and an actual TV at once. If you look in the past, Apple has made slow transitions with all their products. Example, cell phone. They are going to see how the market reacts to their new product because they have never done anything like this, and expand from their. JUST like the five year transitioning effect of iPods, such as, now they have nanos and shuffle, they didn’t have that originally. It would be smart to start out slow. I’m rambling, good day.

Anyway… you didn’t get it right. I know this cleaning lady. To me she said it would be an iPhone with a 50” foldable display. The only reason it is not on the market yet is because Apple doesn’t know how to get the creases out of the display…
Come on people… get a life for C’s sake.

Umm… a 50inch monitor is absolutely ridicules… at 30inch it is already getting to the upper bounds of usability and practicality. So a 50inch would absolutely be so huge you couldn’t use all that space effectively. I have a dell 24inch and its nice, thought I always think that a 30inch would be good too. However, I have a 52inch HD Tv also, and I know how big these things are. There is no way it could sit on a normal desk….
I dono thought, maybe this is where the future is heading, and in 2-3 years 50 inch lcds will be standard, with Monitory Report style or 3d holographic displayes being new…….. However, we will need to have better then HD 1920x1200 quality, something like Pure cinema scape 4000x2000 quality would be perfect for a 50inch tv thought I don’t think the new HD-DVDS or BlueRay would be able to hold all the data. Any we might need to use the holagrpahic DVD’s… Any how, I’m still gona be getting a SED over lcd or plasma. Then we have ULTRA-HDTV too look forward too….

Narro minded view of the differences between them. The panel is the same but that’s about it. In/outs, design, materials etc make the difference. IMO

the 50” monitor is a professional product, not for use with Apple’s home computers like the MacMini, It will carry a resolution in excess of the 4K of RED’s digital camcorder (452x2540) it will be used in movie studios for video post-processing with Final Cut Pro.

just some thoughts:
it’s quite realistic Apple will release a large display to complement the iTV device. Perhaps it won’t be a “computer” display, but just a display you hang on the wall to stream in H.264 video, tv, etc.
people need to realize that lower resolution for streams is “okay!” on a monitor that you sit 6 feet in front of… computer people think in “computer resolutions” that they sit 2 feet in front of… so what apple is doing with TV and Movies will be very watchable from 6 feet… if you don’t believe me, go up to any normal TV… stand or look 2 feet away and you’ll see it’s quite grainy… but looks great from 6 feet away… Exactly! what iTunes will be streaming into the iTV, then onto (possibly) this Apple Monitor.
all new mac machines seem to be coming with 802.11n… cool!
the SlingBox / SlingPlayer is very close to OSX Beta, should be released in the next few days. So this will eliminate the need for Apple to include a TV Tuner with a large Monitor. Apple detests TV as much as it does Radio… it knows TV is a dead end over the long term, so iTV could be the total answer around the old fashioned world of TV.
Eric of Google fame joined Apple’s board a month or so ago, then bought YouTube. The connection to iTV is strong.
Hang on, 2007 is going to be an interesting Apple year.

here is my thought: The iTV will come out this December for Christmas. If you look at Steve’s announcements about dates for the intel machines, he delivered every one significantly before he predicted. that was to not cannibalize sales of the older machines. Now he specifically says ‘january’ for the ITV in August. Think about how much more money Apple could make if they only got it out ONE MONTH earlier. Think about how working 24 hours around the clock would be worth getting it out just 20% faster than he said. He’s not stupid.
anyone agree with me?

Dschor Says:
4000x2000 is not correct. That should be 4000x2250.
More likely if they do come out with this, it will start as a high-end professional tool for video editing - likely resolutions:
4096x2304
8192x4608 would come out 2008.
:-p

Hi all,
I would love to get a monitor upgrade on the current line. I already ordered 23” version and then noticed it does not support HDCP and therefor had to cancel the whole order! This means that current versions of all monitor do not play HD material from example from HD-DVD or Bluray.
Any comments/rumours consering possible upgrade to the monitor line in the beginng of 2007? Better contrast and HDCP atleast.
Thanks,
