iPhone 2.0 software problems

imageQuite a few people are experiencing problems with their iPhone running the latest 2.0 software. Many third-party apps downloaded and installed via Apple’s App Store are reported to be crashing.

In some cases, users are able to resolve problems by reinstalling apps or resetting the iPhone. However,  problems seems to gradually reappear over time. You can find out more information here at Apple Discussion Boards.

Of particular note is a problem with interface lag. Response to a command follows well after the actual input. While resetting can provide a temporary fix, the issue is widespread enough to affect both old and new iPhones, is usually gradual in nature, and is leaving some to conclude that a memory leak is present, which, over time, degrades performance.

Phone 3G owners are complaining of “echoing audio” on their side of calls when paired with a Bluetooth audio system— particularly in vehicles. The feedback doesn’t occur on the receiving end but is known to be tied to the device itself, as fully updated original iPhones don’t suffer from the echo.

AppleInsider also reports that GPS mapping is proving to be unreliable or even non-functional, according to some reports. At its most basic level, some find the device locating itself in Google Maps, well away from its actual position—in one case, claiming a British owner was located off the coast of Canada. More serious instances see users needing to reset the iPhone to invoke GPS, or in the most extreme circumstances, receiving no location at all.

Are you experiencing any problems?

the WPS/GPS, in my case WPS on iphone 2G, works excellent in google maps, now with tracking, automated follow my path…

but some apps have difficulties copying the geocoordinates! even the iphone camera apps is not able to get the correct geolocation into the EXIF!!! in google maps i get the super correct location, but the camera app writes a differenet result into the EXIF, very strange and not understandable!

I’ve had multiple apps crash back to the home screen and just last night I started up Hold ‘Em Poker and the phone crashed/restarted… first time I’ve ever seen that.  I’m also experiencing the interface lag… lots of it… everywhere.  Sometimes it seems there’s a 2 or 3 second delay before the phone reacts after an input.  However, I have not experienced the “audio echoing”. Feels like this OS wasn’t fully baked when Apple had to release it.  Very much looking forward to a 2.01 update showing up in iTunes.  This is on an original iPhone that was upgraded to 2.0.

Greg Says:

I’ve found the phone itself (3G) very reliable. The apps, like apps on any platform, vary widely. GPS data into most apps seem to work fine for what I’m using - accurate enough.

I don’t use the camera, but unfortunately Apple’s own camera app makes longitude positive when it should be negative, so 123.28 in my case instead of the correct -123.28. I’ll be surprised if that doesn’t get fixed in the next update. That puts me in north eastern china instead of north western Oregon.

My biggest challenge is the battery life. I have 3G off (no 3G where I am yet), but with the increased use of applications and the new toys, I find that I’m running out sooner than I used to. Better than other phones I’ve owned, but still not as much as I’d like to see.

Since installing 2.0 on my first-gen iPhone, I’ve had a problem with deleting characters in the Notes application: Sometimes it just won’t stop. Yesterday my shopping list just disappeared while I was shopping because I was deleting an item at the bottom, and it just wouldn’t stop deleting. Never had this problem before the upgrade.

Guinness Says:

2.0 has caused my 1st gen iPhone to stop ringing to alert me to an incoming call.  Still vibrates but ring tones are intermittent at best.  3rd party aps are ok for the most part.  AIM never works.  Crashes and sends me back to main screen after about 5 seconds. Removed ap from iPhone. Not an issue anymore. MLB.com at bat rocks.

Marcus Hollick Says:

The V2.0 upgrade has really messed up my original iPhone, as it no longer allows acces to the phone book through bluetooth connection on my E-Class Merc. Apparently, it’s the same in BMWs too, and I can’t imagine these two manufacturers being too pleased at the potential impact on their business. Come on Apple - get V2.01 out and sort these problems out. It seems to me that it wasn’t quite ready when it was released.

Jerry Says:

My old iPhone and my new 3G both work on 2.0 with my Mini Cooper’s Bluetooth system.  Address book actually works better with this version.  This is the same NAV/Bluetooth found in BMWs.

There are multiple versions in the cars though.  Both our MINIs have the new Nav/Bluetooth.  I have not tried it on the 2006 and prior versions.
