imageIntel has unveiled its Gulftown processor, which could be headed to the Mac Pro (as reported by AppleInsider). The processor is expected to be available in the first half of 2010.

Gulftown is the codename of an upcoming six-core Intel processor using the Intel Nehalem microarchitecture in the 32 nm “Westmere” shrink. It will be the first processor to be sold as Intel Core i9, and its server version will be the Xeon 5600-series.

According to the DailyTech site, Gulftown has six cores, but is capable of efficiently handling 12 threads at once, thanks to its next generation Hyper-Threading. It will use the X58 chipset due to the LGA-1366 socket, but there are rumors of a newer version coming in 2010 that will feature support for USB 3.0 and SATA 6Gb/s.
