‘Fortune’: Microsoft wants to cash in on the iPhone

Microsoft is examining the iPhone “for profit opportunities,” reports Fortune. For a little more than a week, a team of the company’s Silicon Valley software engineers has been examining the iPhone software development kit (SDK for short), the article adds.
The iPhone software development kit was announced on March 6. It provides developers with a set of application programming interfaces (APIs) and tools to create innovative applications for iPhone and iPod touch. Anyone can download the beta iPhone SDK for free and run the iPhone Simulator on their Mac. Apple also introduced a new iPhone Developer Program, giving developers tools for creating native applications, and the new App Store, a way for developers to wirelessly deliver their applications to iPhone and iPod touch users.
“It’s really important for us to understand what we can bring to the iPhone,” Tom Gibbons, corporate vice president of Microsoft’s Specialized Devices and Applications Group, told Fortune. “To the extent that Mac Office customers have functionality that they need in that environment, we’re actually in the process of trying to understand that now.”
