FastMac has announced a 4x Dual Layer Blu-Ray optical drive upgrade for Apple’s Mac Pro and PowerMac G5 computers. The new 5.25-inch, tray loading drive uses one of the fastest Mac-compatible Blu-ray mechanisms to provide up to 50GB of storage on one dual or double layer disc.
It’s also compatible with standard DVD and CD recordable media. Using a SATA connection, the drive’s 4x BD-R DL mechanism allows professional Mac users to burn up to 50GB of data on one disc in less than 50 minutes, according to the folks at FastMac. Fastmac’s 4x Blu-Ray optical drive upgrade is available now, and can be ordered at a special introductory price of US$579.95. Each drive carries a one-year warranty and a 30-day money back guarantee.
Fastmac’s 4x Blu-ray optical drive upgrade requires Mac OS X 10.4.8 or higher and is compatible with the Mac Pro and the PowerMac G5 (it requires SATA to IDE/ATAPI converter cable). Blu-ray burning requires Blu-ray media (sold separately) and third party software such as Adobe Premiere CS3 or Roxio’s Toast 8 Titanium, which enables Blu-ray disk support in the Mac OS Finder. Native support for Blu-ray burning within iLife & iTunes is expected in the near future, but can’t be guaranteed at this time.
