Einstellungen: Reaction to Steve Jobs’ keynote

image After mulling over Apple CEO Steve Jobs keynote, I have mixed reactions. I’m pleased with the AppleTV update. For those who bought one, knowing that they can update it via software update is a relief. Though there is some frustration over here in Germany that many things are still unavailable to those outside the USA (or without a credit card with a US billing address).

I think the MacBook Air pretty much met my expectations in general. It’s larger than I anticipated—meaning I was thinking more along the lines of a 10-12 inch screen. Also, the inclusion of solid state memory, while cool, makes it too expensive for the average Mac user (aka, Me).

I think Time Capsule is an interesting idea and the price is also competitive. I’m still happy with the level of protection my Drobo affords, but for those who need some protection without busting their budget Time Capsule is a viable solution.

I was disappointed that there was no 10.5.2 update released, but I am hopeful that it will appear about the time the MacBook Air starts shipping. There are some issues in 10.5.1 which need to be fixed, especially issues affecting Photoshop. I’ve found that several of my systems are not as stable as they were under the initial 10.5 release, but some of those issues were related to problems in the first security update.

I’m hoping that 10.5.2 will address the problems with Photoshop tools, general system stability, and maybe add Time Machine to Airport Disk capability (that was originally supposed to be there in Leopard). I’m thinking that last issue must have been addressed, otherwise how well will Apple’s own Time Capsule work?

David covers things from a German perspective. As for the title of this column, if you switch the Mac OS to German, Einstellungen means preferences—but it also means your opinion.—Dennis Sellers
