According to a report at Crave (a CNET site), ASUS, a contract manufacturer responsible for building MacBooks, is building an apple tablet.
“We checked back with our source at ASUS on a different day and they confirmed that the Apple Tablet will not be based on existing ASUS designs such as the R1,” Crave notes. “It will come from a completely new blueprint, possibly based on the patent Apple filed back in May 2005. We’re guessing it’ll be based on Intel Core architecture, a tweaked version of Leopard, and have all the multi-touch, CoverFlow goodness we’ve seen in the iPhone and iPod touch.”
On May 11, 2006, Macsimum News reported about an Apple patent that hinted at a tablet computer or a new type of Mac laptop (the graphic with this story is from that patent filing). You can read about it here.

OK...what broad market would this device serve? What great need does it fulfill? I don’t get it--and most supporters just say “I can see a need for thousands of these...” but you have to sell multiple millions to be viable.
