Brought to you courtesy of “Mac Design” magazine: Price point and resolutionthese are two big factors in todays consumer digital camera market. Youll find lots of 2- and 3-megapixel cameras around for less than US$200. Now, Concord challenges the market with the Eye-Q 4060AF, a 4-megapixel camera with a street price at less than $150.
Concords Eye-Q cameras have been around for several years, primarily for branding and sale by other retailers. The 4060AF features a 1.5-inch color LCD, a 6x digital zoom, five flash modes, six scene presets, three levels of JPG compression, and a 16-MB internal buffer.
With an f:3.0 48mm (equivalent) lens, the image quality from the 4060AF is excellent in nearly every case. Images from the 16-MB SD/MMC exhibit very little noise, despite the fact that the camera offers only one sensitivity setting. Flash exposures were also first-rate with good coverage up to 12 feet.
The camera operates from a pair of AA batteries and performance was very good with about 75 exposures per recharge. Controls are simple: A slider bar controls the power switch and slides the lens cover; a second slider bar on the back controls Capture, Play, and Movie modes; and two rear deck buttons access Menu and LCD appearance.
Some frills are missing but dont forget the pricing! For instance, the optical viewfinder provides 80 percent of the view of the 48mm lens and doesnt move with the digital zoom. The 4060AF offers a macro mode with a slider on the front; however, to focus in macro mode, the user must move the camera back and forth to capture the right focus (lame, but better than no macro at all). Its also easy to forget to move the slider back to normal autofocus.
The Concord 4060AF is a first-rate gift camera for snap shooting or Web and a good beginner camera.
Minimum system requirements: Mac OS X or Mac OS 9.x.
Macsimum rating: 7 out of 10
