Apple has released iTunes 7.4.1. There’s no explanation on what the update entails, but Apple recommends it to all users.
Here’s how the update is described: “With iTunes 7.4.1, sync your favorite music and more with the new iPod nano (third generation), iPod classic, and iPod touch, plus create custom ringtones exclusively for iPhone with many of your favorite songs purchased from the iTunes Store. You can now also play purchased videos with closed captioning (when available), easily rate your favorite albums from one to five stars, and watch videos at a larger size inside the iTunes window.”
It’s available as a 38.3MB download for Macs and a 49.1MB download for Windows PCs. You can also get it via the Software Updates component of Mac OS X’s Systems Preferences utility. For Macs, iTunes 7.4.1 requires Mac OS X 10.3.9 or higher.

While Apple is within their rights to prevent you from making ringtones for free from songs purchased from the Apple Store [as this is an explicit clause of the license for the iTMS], it’s poor of Apple to prevent the use of non-ITMS music for ringtones, as they have no knowledge of what license that music actually has and/or the customers fair use right for using a portion of the song for use as a ringtone.
