On the heels of a two-year pilot of personal electronic automated retail shops with ZoomSystems, Macy’s has announced the rollout of this technology to more than half of its full-line department stores around the country.
The new e-Spot automated shops offer consumer electronics via touchscreen technology that processes the transaction and completes the sale in a matter of minutes. The machines will offer brands including Apple, Sony, Canon and MyVu.
The products available from e-Spot include iPods (touch, classic, nano and shuffle); Canon 7MP and 8MP digital cameras; Samsung 7MP digital camera and 1GB Camcorder; MyVu Personal Media Viewers; Sony, V-MODA, Bang and Olufsen and Harman Kardon headphones; and mobile accessories by Belkin. Products range from US$14.99 to $349.99.
The customer can purchase the product as simply as using an ATM, according to Chris Mizer, senior vice president of Macy’s Customer Operations. The customer makes/confirms the product selection, swipes a major credit card or Macy’s gift card, and when the transaction is completed the product is released from the machine. Returns are acceptable by mail within 30 days in original packaging or if damaged. Customers simply call a toll free number to get a return form and ship the merchandise back for credit.

These automated retail shops (vending machines) can also be found in some airports. I know there’s one or two at the Continental terminal at Houston’s Bush Intercontinental Airport. It sells various iPods, iPod accessories as well as Sony PSPs, games, and various headphones.
