Apple, after four quarters as the number eight notebook brand, surged to number seven in the first quarter of 2008, according to DisplaySearch, which conducts display market research and consulting. Apple sold 1.433 million laptops during the quarter, up from 891,000 in the first quarter of 2007.
That’s a year-over-year change of 61 percent. For the first quarter of 2008, Apple had a 4.5 percent market share among laptops.
DisplaySearch notes that the notebook computer market shrank six percent quarter-to-quarter as of the first quarter of 2008, but was up 35 percent to 31 million units. HP remained number one in the notebook market for the seventh consecutive quarter, maintaining a lead of almost two million units over Dell in the number two position.
HP’s share of the market was over 20 percent for the sixth consecutive quarter. Dell grew to 15 percent share, a mark they last held in the fourth quarter of 2006. Most of the other top ten brands have maintained their ranking over the past several quarters, with the exception of Sony, which has dropped from number six in the third quarter of 2007 to number nine in the first quarter of 2008.

My bad. I did make a mistake in the article. It’s now been corrected and Aple went from number eight to number seven.—Dennis

Dave Says:
The notebooks really add to Apples revenue and profit figures. I was a bit disappointed at the lack of any news from Apple and lack of press investigations into upcoming upgrades to the Apple notebook lines.
There just seems to be no interest. This is a bit strange given the June graduation period and the not-to-far-off back to school period.

El Jabon, what happened to the “guarantee” that Apple would release MacBooks, MacBookPros this week? What is the explanation?

WantToKnow Says:
El Jabon, you guaranteed that Apple would release new MacBooks and MacBookPros at WWDC. You even chided those who questioned your knowledge. What is the explanation? Did you really not have any inside knowledge?

Kevin says Says:
Unless El Jabon is Steve Jobs in disguise he knows nothing. HIs inside knowledge is exactly zero. Why do you think Apple has changed vendors on occassion when someone has said something about an upcoming product without permission. All hardware and software releases are rumors for everyone to guess about until the big day when they are finally released. Don’t be a sucker and think that someone has knowledge when they themselves are a rumor.

This doesn’t make sense. They went from one to seven and that’s good? Please correct it.
