Apple market share gains in December ‘nothing short of spectacular’

Apple’s market share gains in December for the Mac and iPhone are impressive. However, for the last days of December, the numbers are nothing short of spectacular, according to a new report from Net Applications.
According to the research firm, the Mac’s November share was 6.80 percent in November and jumped to 7.31 percent in December. The month to month change for the iPhone was .09 percent to .12 percent. In other words, Apple’s market share rose 7.5% for the Mac and 33% for the iPhone in a single month.
This represents a phenomenal increase of 18 percent from November for the Mac and 89 percent for the iPhone,” says Net Applications. “In addition, the iPhone has been taking off in France and the other countries it has been launched in, including an amazing .27 percent share of web browsing in the United States.”
Even more interesting is that for the last two days of December, the Mac and iPhone market’s share jumped to 8.01 percent and .17 percent, respectively. These numbers don’t include visitors using Windows on Mac hardware via Boot Camp or other program. Therefore, these numbers actually understate the market share for the Mac, according to Net Applications.
When it comes to web browser percentages, Internet Explorer remained the top dog for December with 76.04 percent. Firefox was second with 16.80 percent and Safari third with 5.59 percent. This compares to respective market shares for the three browsers of 76.72 percent, 16.39 percent and 5.35 percent for November.
Net Applications’ monthly surveys don’t measure market share in terms of computer systems sold. Instead they sample data from visitors to some 40,000 web sites operated by their clients.
