Apple launches new site for open source projects

Apple has launched Mac OS Forge, a new community development site hosted designed to support Web Kit and other open source projects focused on Mac OS X.
In addition, developers can create and browse third-party open source projects that are closely related to the Mac operating system. Current projects on Mac OS Forge include source code to the new iCal Server in Leopard Server, and Apache-licensed versions of Bonjour service discovery and Launchd process management.
While select projects in Mac OS X are featured on Mac OS Forge, a complete set of open source software within Mac OS X can be found by visiting the Apple Developer Connection.
Here’s what Apple has to say about the site in a note at the Mac OS Forge page: “Mac OS X includes a wide variety of open source software from FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, the GNU Project, and many more projects each its own vibrant developer community. Mac OS Forge is dedicated to supporting the developer community surrounding open source components specific to Mac OS X. Here you will find resources for working with the source code to popular Apple-original projects, as well as third party projects that are closely related to the Macintosh operating system.”

I’d love to see them put the iApps on MacOSforge, and allow people the option to use community versions of them. :-) I think that would be groovy. As in, OS X ships with Apple’s version of iPhoto, iTunes, etc. but there’s always community versions for people to thinker with new features. They could still charge for the apple version, maybe because they’d have .mac or something? Or they could just charge for .mac? Because then the open stuff could create a .mac alternative for personal use; like .mac, but one can host on ones own computer. Hope that made sense.

Your link points to “http:///” and not to the desired location.
And yes, this is rather old. Apple announced this during WWDC last month. Check out the date on the Welcome page:
