Apple laptop sales way up, desktop sales way down last quarter

Laptop sales outpaced desktop computer sales for the first time last quarter, according to the iSuppli research firm. Worldwide, computer companies shipped 38.6 million notebook computers in the third quarter of 2008, up almost 40 percent year-over-year. Desktop shipments grew 1.3 percent year-over-year to 38.5 million units.
Silicon Valley Insider says this is good news for Apple, “which is increasingly a notebook company” (I might argue the point, but I won’t). If the trend toward notebooks continues—which we expect it will—Apple stands to gain market share, the article says.
Last month Apple U.S. laptop sales—led by new MacBooks—increased 22 percent year-over-year, about 1.5x the rate that Windows-based notebook sales grew, according to the research firm NPD Group. However, Apple’s U.S. desktop shipments dropped 35% year-over-year last month. “That could get a boost as soon as next month, when Apple is widely expected to unveil new desktops, such as a new Mac mini,” notes Silicon Valley Insider.
