When the new Pixar animated film, Wall-E hits the theaters this June, you’ll notice that one robot, Eve (shown at left in photo), looks pretty familiar. Her form and design cues are reminiscent of an iPod, or maybe the original Airport Extreme base station.
That’s because Wall-E marks the first time that Pixar and Apple have collaborated on design for a film. Fortune magazine is reporting today that when Wall-E director Andrew Stanton needed help on designing the Eve prototype in 2005, he called Steve Jobs, who sent over Apple’s lead designer Johnny Ive to look over the robot.
Richard Siklos, the author of the Fortune article, says he wondered about the Eve connection after seeing a screening of Wall-E in New York a few weeks ago, then asked Disney CEO Bob Iger about it when he ran into him at a party. Iger confirmed the Apple connection and Ive’s involvement.
Maybe Eve is a preview of products to come out of Cupertino, albeit in the distant future. (Thanks to Adam Isserlis for the heads-up on this story.)
