Investment bank Piper Jaffray is telling investors there’s a good chance that Apple will announce the much-rumored ultraportable/subcompact Mac by March 2008. In a note to clients, analyst Gene Munster said the device might be a smaller laptop or a table device using the multi-touch technology of the iPhone and iPod touch.
The so-called ThinBook (which isn’t Piper Jaffray’s moniker, but that of the rumor mill) might be a new entry in the MacBook line with a full keyboard and 10 or 11- inch screen, Munster said. (Current MacBooks have 13-inch screens) On the other hand, it might be an iPhone/iPod touch-like device with bigger screen and features such as data storage, file saving and document editing.
“We believe Apple’s multi-touch technology is slightly ahead of competitors using touch based input technology, and as such we expect Apple to leverage its multi-touch technology in future products,” Munster told clients. He added that, in whatever form, an ultraportable should be especially popular in Asia where UMPCs (ultra mobile personal computers) are very popular.
