The 2008 Best App Ever Awards are now open to receive nominations. Sponsored by 148Apps, the inaugural competition is the first iPhone OS Application achievement awards to recognize the best iPhone apps and games released in the iTunes App Store in 2008. The goal is to help publicize the very best apps available, not just the best-selling apps. There are multiple award categories covering both apps and games.
Thirty-three award categories recognize practical, creative, technical, and whimsical achievements in iPhone applications and games.
Categories include:
• Most Useful App
• Best Use of Location Services
• Most Creative Use of iPhone Hardware
• Best Productivity Killer App
• Best Kid Distraction App
• Best 99 Cent Game
• Best Game Controls
• Most Innovative Game
148Apps founder, Jeff Scott, launched the award competition after the iTunes App Store announced their Best of 2008 lists based purely on sales. “We don’t believe that sales numbers are the best indication of a of a great iPhone app”, according to Scott. “There are so many creative, engaging, and groundbreaking applications that never make it to the top sales list. We want to see the developers of these apps recognized for the their fantastic achievements.”
Nominations are currently being accepted through December 30th, 2008. The top five popular nominees in each category will be combined with 5 nominations from industry experts. In addition, the top 10 nominated iPhone apps overall will compete for the title Best App Ever.
All nominations will be announced on December 31, 2008, and voting for a winner of each category will take place through January 7, 2009. There will be one winner selected for each category and winners will be announced at the 2009 MacWorld Expo in San Francisco on January 7th, 2009.
