Time for a Mac TV/computer hybrid/combo?

By Dennis Sellers Apple ico Nov 21 at 7:00am

I’ve said before that I’d love for Apple to release an iMac with some of the TV functionality of, say, the Sony VAIO LV Series PC/TV All-in-One, which has a TV tuner, Blu-ray Disc record/playback and HDMI input. Many of you disagree, but a new study shows that such a hybrid TV/computer might be more practical than it would first appear.

Should Apple go with a straight laptop line-up (no desktops)?

Time for a Mac TV/computer hybrid/combo?
Said:

Apple already has a system that functions in a similar way (minus Blu-Ray). The Mac Mini hooked to an HDTV can function as a media playback unit and a general computer on a really big screen. I’ve been doing this for a long time with 2 systems and really can’t imagine sitting at a desk with a standard computer (iMac, etc...).  I do feel this is the future as HDTV’s decrease in price and increase in quality.

I don’t see the importance of recording. The HD world is full of copy protection and the cable and satellite folks are hardly going to make it easy to unscramble their signals. In any case the PVR solution we have from our satellite provider is actually really good.
The El Gato world, though very nice, is really tied closely to SD television and aver the air HD reception which is hardly the future.

Perhaps the Apple TV has a point in the US but it’s a bit pointless elsewhere. Nice first try though.

Revolutionary Wine Vintage Card comes to iPhone/iPod touch
Said:

I got this the other day and I love it. I am a novice trying to be a wine snob--this gadget has helped me on several occassions, and it is indeed easy. The wonderful thing is I can just whip out my iPhone in the wine shop, grocery store or restaurant and get the information on whether to buy that 2006 red from Washington or the 2004 red from Napa Valley in a few seconds.

Time for a Mac TV/computer hybrid/combo?
Said:

OK, Here’s why none of this is going to happen and why the Apple TV sucks. Steve is the largest shareholder in Disney, a movie studio among other things. The other Movie studios already hate him, because they are all in the music and movie business (RIAA and MPAA) too. He walks a thin line of “how far can I go without pissing these guys and WallMart off again.” Apple still has to leave movie and TV solutions up to third parties like El Gato. AppleTV is a compromise he is stuck with for now. It’s not because they don’t know what to do or how to market it if their way were clear. So when he says they don’t have it quite right, he is not referring to Apple engineering, he’s referring to Entertainment Industry politics. Even though he saved their asses once already with iTunes. Some are still not satisfied with that for various reasons, some legitimate and others selfserving, and so it goes.

Quad-core iMacs coming in two months? How about a quad-core Mac mini?
Said:

I agree with Resuna. I need something that I can render with yet not start liquidating the retirement funds.

Time for a Mac TV/computer hybrid/combo?
Said:

Go bigger. The iHome:
--capabilities of desktop, 4-8 cores
--large storage
--add Xgrid with simultaneous multiuser capabilities
--interact w/ remote, iPhone/iTouch/iPods, Apple thin-client netbooks, or naked keyboards, monitors, and mice
--Apple Express w/ wireless connections to above
--Apple TV capabilities + Tivo capabilities done right

You basically have an in-house server interacting with thin clients. Clients have processing power for simple tasks, but more demanding ones go to the iHome. This computer/TV/entertainment hub also serves machines throughout the house.

iHome becomes a close part of the “cloud,” removing the disadvantage of slowness due to distance, and with netbooks made available for it, the combo is cheaper than a houseful of existing Macs, but more powerful. Great game machine, too.

All possible to do within a few months, all at a reasonable cost.

I would be in line today.

Quad-core iMacs coming in two months? How about a quad-core Mac mini?
Said:

I really don’t care what CPU goes into the Mac mini, I just want an nVidia or ATI GPU before I’ll upgrade from my G4 mini.

Possibly a “mini pro”, with “only” two cores, but a real GPU and a 3.5” hard drive and room for more than 2GB of RAM.

But the CPU? That hasn’t been the bottleneck for the mini since the Core Duo.

Quad-core iMacs coming in two months? How about a quad-core Mac mini?
Said:

The Mac Mini has always lagged behind in number of cores, holding on to the Core Solo chip beyond the rest of the Mac line.  In any case, it seems quite unlikely that a $270 chip would go into a $600 machine.  I’d much rather the Mac Mini get the cheapest working Core Duo available and keep its price low, in any case.  Differentiation (pricewise) is a better selling point for the Mini than power.

Is it time for 'Macsimum News' to change its name?
Said:

Dennis,

As you know, if you do change the name, simply programming your DNS to refer anyone who has finally remembered how to spell Macsimum will be properly referred to a new site, instead of the porno site that comes up if you misspell it now (made you look!).

I’m not sure that I’d change the name itself, as you do have some earned brand recognition, however, I might change the sub-title of the site to something that better reflects your expanded focus.

Additionally, I would not, as someone suggested previously, modify your focus to include Vista or Windows 7, as there are way too many sites covering those topics already, and frankly, you couldn’t do it as well (since that is not your passion). Let those who already foam at the mouth over the latest POS Windows innovation (read: stolen from Apple) continue to drool rabidly over finally getting a base-OS feature (like stability). You should continue to follow your true passion and cover the Apple news.

And, the unintended play on words of Mac Sue Me, is actually a fairly apt name, since “Another day, another lawsuit” has become a regular theme here. :)

Spend your time on revamping the logo and subtitle. It will focus the issue if done properly.

Whatever you decide, we’ll still be here…
